| So lost, so I'll throw in this bit of Zen psychobabble talk... Quote: |
"Seeing the world just the way it is sounds like a good idea…but it is a radical idea that requires more of us than it seems to at first sight, because the world as we know it is nothing other than the world of our projections and confusions. The very idea of "myself" is the biggest projection of all, the screen beyond which I cannot see. Everything in my experience is colored by it; everything I cherish and desire is created by it."

| I don't like "hit" one little bit.
I much prefer to touch.

If you are looking for a comment on a particular situation, please rephrase your question.
Your comment was not well understood and the fellow idiots on f.net have been having fun.
If we can understand your subject, I am sure someone will provide a comment that is not nonsense.
Don't give up, keep trying. We have a lot of fun but not all of us are unkind.

| Closed Distance Thank you fencerbill for your reply
In an Attack at close quarters and you touch your opponent when arm is bent or angulated
Is that valid touch?
Should the arm always be in extension to gain a touch ?
Regards

| An angulated or bent arm can still result in a valid touch, even if the fencers are at close quarters.

Maurice | When you hit, you get a touch. The only time positioning is important is when both fencers hit. |

Fencerbill | Also, this is something that should go in Fencing Discussion. Water Cooler is a place for less-serious and non-fencing talk, thus the silly comments. |

The ROW rules are the same at close quarters as they are an any other distance. The ref should look at who is attacking first, even if it's only by pushing a cut onto target with the fingers.
Very often you see people take a head parry and then basically just drop the arm straight down to riposte to the opponent's head or body.

Maurice | If there is a light on only one side, then of course that fencer will have a tough recorded on the score sheet.
If lights are on on both sides, then the right of way rules are applied. If one fencer has a bent arm, that does not help him to have right of way determined in his favor.
It is not enough to say that the fencer has a bent arm, or that his arm is angulated, to determine whether a touch will be recorded in his favor.
It depends on what both fencers are doing. There are several people, including highly rated referees and members of the USFA Fencing Officials Commission, who post from time to time here on f.net.
If they could clearly understand what question you want answered, they could give you a definitive answer. In my opinion, your question is still not clear enough to give an answer.
Maurice, we welcome your participation and we will continue to try to help you.
