It's hard to believe, but I think the side of the draw with the reigning Olympic Champion and the past three World Champions may slightly be the easier side.
Slightly.
Sada has inherited some strong fencers in her path: Marzocca/Kharlan is a tough 16, and the winner of Diatchenko/Socha is no gimme, either. If Sada prevails, she will likely fence Tan Xue or Velikaia in the 4.
Of course, it's the Olympics, and nothing is easy. Becca faces Touya in the 16, and likely Perrus in the 8. And then there's Mariel attempting to repeat. She's got to get past Jozwiak in the 16, which can be tough if Bogna is having a good day. Then, she's got to slip past either Netchaeva or Bao to get to the 4.
As much as I hate to see Americans have to fence each other at the top levels of the game, it would be awesome if all three have good days tomorrow. |
Here we go with the opening of the 2008 Olympic Fencing events.
I did a quick run though in the podcast, but a lot of what I was remembering from the French fencers was from the last world championships. Becca's draw is heavy on the French while Sada's is heavy on the eastern Europeans. Mariel has a mix of possible draws, with Nechaeva looming in the top 8 as well as a T-16 vs. Poland's Jozwiak. Xue Tan has to get through Velikaya in the T-8 for a shot at the medal rounds.
I don't think anyone is stopping Tan or Velikaya prior to them meeting in the 8.
All of the media attention for this Olympics has been on Mariel as the defending champion and Becca as the up and coming fencer and Mariel's club mate. That sets up a totally different atmosphere for Sada compared to Athens where she was expected to win. Even though she's ranked #1 in the world and the #1 seed, there's not as much press around Sada. I think that will help her since there isn't so much external pressure on her to win.

| the video feed schedule on nbcolympics.com has four listings for the women's saber competition tonight. Does that mean we'll have four different streams, and maybe even be able to watch either or both bouts when our fencers go at the same time on different strips? I'm keeping my fingers crossed! |

| I guess it is too much to ask for timely DE table updates.
If I understand times correctly round of 64 should be done by now: http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/EN...EW003000.shtml

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! | Four different streams it looks like. Looks like I'm getting:
Pundyk (UKR) v. Du Plooy (RSA)
An Empty Strip
Besbes (TUN) v. Chetty (RSA)
Wieckowska (POL) v. Byrne (IRL)
It's like information overload picking which one to watch. Edit: Definitely looks like one stream for each of the four pistes (green, yellow, blue, red in order on my 4 in 1 viewer from top to bottom)

| Recap of the first WS matches In the round of 64 match, Poland storms out to a 4-0 lead vs. Byrne of Ireland. Byrne gets on the scoreboard with a slow attack and then followes it up with an attempt at another one, but is caught with her arm back.
It's a case of "premier attack no" as Byrne's hand comes back during her motion, allowing Wieckowska to take over on the attack. At the break, Wieckowska leads 8-1.
In other matches Besbes of Tunisia leads Chetty 8-2 at the break and Pundyk of Ukraine leads 8-4 at the break.
Starting out the second period, Byrne closes the gap 6-9. An attack, another "premier attack no" call, and a close-out riposte put it back 12-6 for Poland.
The first matches of the round of 64 end with Besbes winning 15-2. Besbes will face Perrus in the 32. Wieckowska wins 15-8 to face off against Nechaeva. On the red piste, Pundyk wins 15-7 to face Velikaya.
I focused more on the Byrne bout and noticed the fencers moving cautiously and the "premier attack no" being called on the failed, or back and forth, cut. This is something that the US fencers were preparing for, so seeing how it is being called throughout the day will be interesting. |

| Is it bad that I'm switching feeds looking for an "attractive" bout?

No ads, just rebuffering.
EDIT: I stand corrected, I just got an ad, LOL! |

| *sigh* I can't watch it because NBC has chosen to use a new player that won't work on a PowerPC Mac (developed of course by their partner Microsoft), instead of a proven, easy to use, multiplatform streaming technology.
Bastards. I hope they LOSE money.
