| Seems the Chinese hate some olympians... http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.p...w&pageId=70116
If this has been posted already sorry for the dupe but this seemed way over the top.
First the long term human rights issues, then some problems getting some buildings built, then the smog problem now this. Seems safe to say this will be the worst olympics ever, in general, and will never be back.

| While obviously not ruling out concerns for human rights violations by the Chinese government, I take any "reporting" from WorldNutDaily with a generous pinch of salt. Are there any references available on this topic from more reputable sources? |

| It doesn't look like it was originally WDN's story, it looks like it was reported in a Hong Kong paper called the South China Morning Post (according to the byline anyway).
I would be entirely unsurprised if it was true. |

| Dekko, how kind of you to inform me that it's incumbent upon ME to scour the internet for articles which interest YOU! I had no idea. My point was just to get it out there that WingNutDaily is a loony bin and it's best to look elsewhere for reporting. (The dramatic difference in tone and content between your three subsequent links and your WND link demonstrates my point.) |

| You're right, my bad. Should have realized who I was dealing with. Then again I would suspect most people who would question sources are too lazy to look up info for themselves. Next time I will know better.
None of this changes the fact many of the US athletes may have issues off the field of play trying to compete at their best. Since I know better know, some news outlets have reported possible road blocks in the city which could lead to some not being on time to compete. I will let you look them up for yourselves. Happy hunting!

Nice, thanks for the heads up. Noted for future reference.

It's all just in the turn of the phrase...

| Back to the point. This is just worst thing for these Olympics..but the world needs to know how bad things are...perhaps this is the best way to open up China.

| China has always been very, very insular; you're not going to eliminate that entirely just by having the Olympics there, but i think it has the potential to be an excellent start. |

Hey dekko, while we are randomly speculating about how bad China is, why don't we also say they also have WMD's! Then maybe the US could just invade and "fix" them before August.

| Well, at least the Chinese authorities are right on top of the politically explosive "alternate gymnasts" issue.
Keep those kids out of the country, and a smoothly running Olympics Games is virtually a gimme!

| They're also bigger and stronger than the USA... so they'll be keeping those WMDs for some time to come, I'd say.

| Dekko: if you are trying to draw someone's attention to a particular point then it falls to you to provide credible sources - not your readership. Don't complain if people are dismissive because you do not provide the necessary quotes. Checking sources should be considered part of any discussion relating to a news story.
This is a political thread and nothing to do with fencing. I am going to stick it in the politics section of the watercooler. |

However when you apply it to the Chinese you might say that it's relevent, but in the context of the Chinese why not just say "they have nuclear weapons" and be done with it?
Telk: I am not getting at you at all - just the term. |

Telk: I am not getting at you at all - just the term. | I think WMD is used because it's a more general term. It could be nuclear weapons, of course, but it could also be chemical or biological weapons. Sure, it's a good political soundbite, but all three of the above mentioned weapon types are pretty taboo from a military/political standpoint, so it's easier to refer to WMD than each individually. Could the US invade China and win without use of WMDs? Probably not. Could China invade the US? Definately not. Who would win if a war were fought on some neutral piece of ground...say, Africa over natural resources? I think that would be an easy US win. China doesn't have the equipment to project its military power across the globe like the US does. They're developing it, certainly, but they're still very much a regional military power. |
