Olympic Prediction #3 - European margin vs. rest of the world in team events? Hi!
Assume that a team fencing Gold in the Beijing games counts for 3 points, a team silver for 2 points, and a team bronze for 1 point.
Then, all team points for Europe are counted together. Likewise with the team points earned by non-European countries. There are 4 team events, and the bronze medals will be bouted over. Therefore, there are 4*(3+2+1)=24 team points to contend over. Hypothetical example: USA wins the gold in WS, and Asia takes one silver. All other medals are European. Then the rest of the world earns 3+2=5 points, while Europe gets 24-5=19 points. In this example, Europe wins over the rest of the world by a margin of 19-5=14 team points.
Using this calculation method, what will the European win margin be?
All team placements will be bouted over, see bottom of page: http://en.beijing2008.cn/sports/fenc...14432493.shtml -
Hi!
Final Tally:
COUNTRY GOLD SILVER BRONZE France 2 2 0
Italy 2 0 5
Germany 2 0 0
USA 1 3 2
China 1 1 0 Russia 1 0 0
Ukraine 1 0 0
Romania 0 1 1
Japan 0 1 0 Poland 0 1 0
S. Korea 0 1 0 Hungary 0 0 1
Spain 0 0 1
By continents:
GOLD SILVER BRONZE
Europe 8 4 8
ROW 2 6 2
So, Europe got 8*3+4*2+8*1=40 medal points. The rest of the world got 2*3+6*2+2*1=20 medal points. This gives a points margin of 20 points to Europe in all fencing events, individual and team combined.
Only team events: Men G S B
Europe 2 1 2
ROW 0 1 0 Women G S B
Europe 2 0 1
ROW 0 2 1 Total G S B
Europe 4 1 3 (4*3+1*2+3*1=17 points)
ROW 0 3 1 (3*2+1*1=7 points
Here, the European margin is 10 points. Another thing to note: Europe took a completely clean sweep of the Epee medals. So much for the notion that countries which are not connected should specialize in epee, since the possibility of refs sticking it to small countries is smaller there.
Have a nice time!

by country so by this formula usa and italy would be tied? "who do you think you are?"
"Do you think by making someone a knight, you make them a better fighter?"
"Yes" -
