When faced with the unfamiliar, the elderly tend to shoehorn it into a pre-existing category in their brains, rather than create a new one. This explains a lot of the "what the huh?"-inducing conclusions and observations they make.
Or maybe they just do it on purpose, to rile them young-uns.
Anyway, I like Telk's new avatar.

Well, there is an art to telling a joke, and if you choose to tell it via drawing you should bloody well be able to DRAW! Otherwise just write the effing joke out!

I think that the "art" of the joke is the humor content, and not the artistic content.
And compared to real art, Peanuts (or substitute any other comic strip here) and xkcd are both pretty pathetic, just to varying extents.
Art or not, there is certainly a lot of talent involved in managing to consistently draw characters in such a way that they are recognizable and always look like the same character, and with a range of emotion. The range of emotion that XKCD gets through stick figures is incredible.
