Let's think of this as the post-summer nationals wrap-up thread with a positive spin. This is the place for amusing anecdotes and generally positive things.... did your ref yell bingo mid bout? Post here. Did you meet a new FNetter (I did, sadly I was a reffing a bout that he went on to lose; never did get around to introducing myself)? Post it. See a new referee that was doing well or looked promising at least? Let us know..... ok go.

I was reffing a DE in the round of 128 in Y14 men's foil. The bout consisted of one of the higher seeds fencing a kid who was a fairly low seed and was clearly a beginner.
The bout was easily dominated by the higher seed. When the score reached 9-2 or something like that, the lower-seeded fencer raised his mask and asked, "Sir, wasn't there supposed to be a break at 8?"
Personal highlight: I got to ref Robbie Carillo's DE (yes, sadly he had only one DE). I used that bout to claim the "Someone in your pool/tableau flirts with you" square in ref bingo!
The ref bingo has to be the highlight of the tournament. I coulda won if it were cumulative, but I never got anywhere near enough squares in one day.
Lowlight: I felt really really bad for the fencers and refs who had final 8 bouts on strip when the fire alarm went off and everyone had to evacuate the building. Myself, I had just finished my round of 8 bout, and as we all shuffled out the door, I ran to get my handshake before leaving so that I was officially not required to return.
I'm pretty sure I saw a bout score of 14-something at the time of the evacuation.
I definitely made bingo! and had the coach that helped me make it come ask how many boxes he added and I'd a few that I missed

Hey, how 'bout them armory lines, or lack thereof (except the day before the competition started, which got up to an hour or so)?
And score and timing machines on every strip (that will be the norm from here out)!
Question: Did anyone notice that the "pipe and drape" around the pods did not have the "drape"? We saved a bunch of money and effort on that, and I didn't miss the drape, but the pipe did the job it was supposed to do just the same.
Public thanks to the volunteers!!! They were great.
Getting to 14-14, three touches with no results, having the reel clip break, waiting approximately 10mins to finish the bout, not eating fast enough due to break, winning the bout, losing the next, getting a migraine, going home before my club medaled in the team event that day.
My day was great.

BOOOOOP.
Wrong thread.
There are threads for complaining, which is totally wonderful and fine to do.
This one?
Not about complaining.
I want ref bingo too!

Not having the drape on the dividers was a very good change. It's the weight of all that awkward fabric that used to cause the dividers to fall down so often, and without the drape it's much easier to see.

The one downside that I can see is for fencing photography. From some angles, the solid, dark color provides a much nicer background. Now, more photos will show fencing action, but the background will be cluttered with chairs and gear and people. And since most of the people are fencers in their whites, the fencers on strip could end up blending into the background.
That might be fine for candid shots and such, but I would imagine that you want drapes or a raised strip or something for the final if not the top 8.

I thought it was all the kids running around and into them.
The no drape was a win for ease of going in and out, but was an aesthetic loss.

When I first saw the lack of drape, I was rather surprised, but actually thought it was better. The drape usually drag down the pipes when people crawl under it to get into the sport zone. That's a smart idea to drop the draping.
Favorite Bingo square I never had the opportunity to fill out (b/c it was introduced the day I left): Fencer calls for assesseurs and gets craded themselves.
Bonus points b/c this arose from a situation where the fencer lost the bout in question on that first call. Extra bonus points b/c the fencer should have been black carded (but wasn't) BUT also happened to be a ref who undoubtedly recieved a card that day. Super Bonus Multiplier: The guy making the cards didn't realize it was a jab at a referee, he just thought it was funny.
FTW
