    Hi!

    Hey everybody!
I'm in high school and I've fenced for two years with my school (they make us fence foil but I do epee on the side because I like it a lot better). I instantly loved fencing, even though I'm not awesome at it.

I'm looking for a fencing camp, if it's not already too late to sign up. Is there a place where I should post about that? Or can I just do it here? I live in New England, and I want a place that isn't... "elite" in any way, because I'm not that good and I don't like feeling crappy. I also want somewhere that works on your fencing skills- I went to Penn State and it seemed like just a really long work out to me. Any suggestions?

This place is cool. I'm gonna have to do a bit of exploring... I also want to get a new epee, but I have no idea what kind is good. Is there a specific place to ask about that?

That's about it, methinks. I have to get back to my summer reading. Thanks!

For advertisements for camps, there is the "Tournaments and Camps" section (which is somewhat sparse, at the moment) of the discussion board, as well as the website askFRED (requires an account be set up (free and easy to do), but is immensely useful for finding (and registering for) tournaments and camps).

The forum also has a "Trading Post" section and an equipment review section, and various threads in the "Armory" discuss the merits and failings of the various brands, as well as how to maintain and repair equipment.

Additionally, the site administrator, Craig, is also a fencing equipment vendor, and the site includes an online store...

Welcome! ...I think. Foil is good, epee is bad. Fence more foil. That is all

Foil the best (and least painful)! Lessthan epee or sabre

    Fence more foil

It's actually more painful to be hit in foil than in sabre. Sabre blades are made for cuts; for most of the blade the edges are rounded. Foil blades are square, with 4 sharp corners. Your opponent executes a flick or parry badly and hits you with one of those corners---not good...

Epee, OTOH, is just plain painful, whether to fence or to watch.

Of course it's not, I never complimented him on anything. I just simply said I like you, and so would nein. That IS a good thing though.

Haven't you ever got thwacked in the elbow while fencing sabre?

Admittedly, fencing a bad flicker in foil hurts... i think i parried a flick to the chest and somehow he flicked my back hand... (bad distance on my part, not fully his fault)

The only time I can recall being hit in the elbow in sabre was BETWEEN phrases, when I wasn't expecting it. By my coach, no less.

Usually I parry attacks to that line at least partially; tierce is my strongest guard...

By the way, I heard it's kinda hard to parry in sabre...

P.S. I still have the scar on my back hand from the start of june (june 8 i think...) I'm not exactly the brightest guy though, so that's not saying much. I ran into a shin-high wall thing last year and there's still a scar from that too...

Harder than in foil, certainly. Sometimes, at least.

That's why distance is so critical. The parry is relatively secure if your distance is right. If not---not.

Now, the riposte, that's something else again.

I watched sabre at a youth event at the SYC, and there were at least 5 attacks for one parry...

Sure. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it's "harder".

We in sabre take to heart the old adage that the best parry is not to be there. If you can make your opponent's attack miss altogether, one needn't worry about his blade whipping around your guard, or driving your blade aside for the remise...

In foil and epee, where you have to hit with the point only and have to depress a spring-loaded button in order to score, they can afford to play tic-au-tac back and forth. Trying this in sabre, where the whole blade is live and only needs to graze a thread, is generally not productive. ( Or in all candour attractive. )

You know what would be interesting, sabre without rules... I wonder how many people would get hurt...

Yeah. Unlike, say, epee without rules.

    Or baseball.

    Or golf.

    Or...

Baseball without rules would be similar to watching saber without rules; a lot of senseless whacking.
