Steve, I like the idea.
I would only make one suggestion.

As a student of heraldry, I'm sure you are aware of the rule for not placing a color on a color or a metal on a metal. (Meaning, don't put white and yellow next to each other, and don't put the other colors next to each other. That's for all you non-heralds out there.)

So, how about including a Pale Or between the Vert and Gules fields? (A yellow stripe between the red half and the green half.) It would go a long way toward giving better definition to the design at a distance, which is really what flags are all about, don't you think?

Just a suggestion.
