For the record, I am an épéeist. However, rather than pimp/pander (and outright lie about) my own weapon of choice, I would encourage making an enlightened choice based on a bit of research into, and actual bouting experience with, each weapon, and pursuing the one(s) that you find best suits you.

| They ususally start everyone in foil, but please don't just stand there, try epee.
A little story: I fenced foil only then picked up epee and did better, when I quit, I gave all my epees and a foil to my old coach, he used the epees and finally got his rating. It was epee I feel certain, but I also remembered that his former coach highly recommended epee to him, but he didn't listen.
Another story: a fenced in a small town and noticed a tall, older but very strong male athlete jogging. We started talking and I convinced him to at least try epee. I can really spot a winner. He started to win and I simply couldn't beat him after that. He was at least six foot three inches of solid steel, so it depends on what condition you're in as well.

| it's never to late, I am 67 and took up fencing this past Jan. I have also fenced in my first competition on June 21st. I did'nt win but I had a great time. I love this sport. Don't let anyone say your too old. | |

| Never let your physical age say about your mental even you're bald.
I will say start with foil first, learning how to place your hand en garde and all the hand fencing basis, footworks too.
Then you will make your choice.
-Do you like it academic quick and fast response (I know it is praticly the same for all other Armes) then you will improve your skills with foil.
-Waiting for an opportunity and attack your opponent like a panther , then Epee will be your soul .
-Slashing and slaying fast and efficiently your adversary without enough parade, then sabre...
Anyway what I just wrote is a part of what I want to express to you but I got a slightly lack of communication.
And I am not a foil addict, but it is the weapon wich I learned all the basics and wich I came back to it when I want to improve some styles of guard.
