collegiate fencing events

Does anyone have any info on upcoming collegiate competitions?

I might just be dumb but I have yet to find any good current list of anything related to college fencing. I suppose askfred spoiled me as far as finding competitions is concerned.

Most collegiate programs have relatively stable schedules and know where they're likely to be competing year-to-year. If you're asking about individual competitions, there aren't all that many (Temple Open, Penn State Open, and a few others, some of which are limited to member schools of a specific conference (e.g. NEIFC/NEWIFA's the "Big One", NIWFA's Christmas Invitational)). If you're asking about dual meets a lot of it is either conference-based or by invitation.

What school are you associated with? How far are you willing to go? What type of competition are you looking for? Give us a bit of information and we'll be much more able to help you find what you want.

Thanks for all of your help.

My name is Jason Warren and I am the men's captain of the recently reformed Old Dominion University Fencing team. The University is in Norfolk VA (think William and Mary.) We will see how far we can travel once our dues come in this fall but probably most of the east coast would be fair game. I've found a number of competitions such as Sweet Briar's, Hunter's, and Temple's but (correct me if I'm wrong) they all seem to be womens only competitions. Last year we received one invitation from RU but they backed out of it for some reason or another.

Is there no comprehensive competition listing online? I've tried MACFA but their site has been derelict for years.

thank you again for all your help

Nope, there's no comprehensive competition listing online.

Temple Open is co-ed. Oiuyt can tell you more about that. For more information on MACFA you might want to try Private Messaging Wafath.... Although Oiuyt can give you more information than I can.. actually, most people can.

Honestly, the easiest way to get an event together is to email some other colleges, get the gym for a day, and have an event. Or just email club teams around you and ask what tournaments they go to, what schools they fence, and then try to do things that way.

Does anyone know if Brandeis has an open? That also might be an option. My young brain is clouded by age and long bus rides.

Brandeis doesn't have an open. There's the Pomme de Terre, which, among other events, has an open, and it happens to be at Brandeis, but it's not a college event, and it's not during the college season.

And besides, Virginia and Massachusetts are pretty far away.

You could try contacting WAFATH.

There are several colleges within Va. A lot of them are in MACFA, but that's a hard conference to get into and requires you to have some sort of track record. If you're willing to travel and want dual meets your best bet is probably talking to Wafath about hooking into a BWCFC date (Balto-Washington Conference). For an individual competition I recommend Temple. If your team is really ambitious you could also look into doing USACFC's at the end of the year (collegiate club nationals.

Hold on, as VP of the Radford Fencing club, I have to disagree. We never backed out of it, I thought it was agreed between our two schools that we couldnt come up with a date, and our school didnt have the space avaible.

Minor correction - unless there was a women's event scheduled at the same time then the Haverford event on November 11th and Hopkins event on Jan 27th were both conference events (MACFA).

Just for reference, for the upcoming season (08-09) the Penn State Open will be November 1-2 and the Temple Open November 15-16. In both cases women on the Saturday and men on the Sunday. Note that this is a flip-flop from the traditional weekends due to the PSU home football schedule this season. NAC B is the weekend between the two collegiate tournaments.

Ummm....pause. Several of these are actually collegiate dual meet events that are in no way shape or form "OPEN" and require advance scheduling/approval at bare minimum. IIRC only Temple and Penn State, plus possibly the Big One? are actually open events. Not sure about the Big One at all actually, the rest, I think, are dual meets which require advance scheduling.

I didn't have any direct communication with RU, last years president did so I can't pull up exact quotes but we had no qualms about the dates given. We should try to reschedule one for this year, send me a PM and we'll work out some details once the season starts
