    Lame/Jacket question

Hi all, this is the first time I am posting on this forum and I'd just like to ask a quick question.

I am a foilist and I used to use an allstar lame with a LP Athens jacket. However I switched to the LP lightweight jacket as the allstar one was shredding my jacket and the armpit area of the sleeves.
I've switched to an allstar Startex jacket but I want to use my allstar lame again. Does anyone know from experience if the allstar lame would shred this jacket as well?

    Thanks, OT

You're taking a rough surface and rubbing it against cloth. Do you have any reason to expect a different result?

My experience is that whether a Lame erodes a jacket is more dependent on the jacket than the Lame. Older Lames didn't erode jackets as much as the more recent stainless Lames. The erosion of the jacket is quite dependent on the material. I have repaired jackets where the Lame has completed eroded through the jacket. In one case on the off hand wrist and another where the inner upper arm of the jacket was completely eaten through.

And it can depend on exactly when a brand name jacket from a leading manufacturer was made. The manufacturers do change the materials they use. I have seen newer jackets eroded while older jackets of the same model weren't. I have a 1996 Allstar Startex jacket with no erosion, although that's not the best indicator since I don't fence Foil.

    Good luck.
    Whoopee! My avatar is back.

Yea I agree with Fencerbill, depends on the materials and also why don't you try a new lame, they all do the same thing...

Are ultralight lames less abrasive than the nickel and stainless steel ones? Or is it more dependent on the manufacturer than the type of lame?

Ultralight lames are typically less abrasive... The copper/stainless ones are almost as bad as sandpaper, the ultralights are usually pretty smooth.
