Hi Timberwolf_CY,
I'm still working my way into the fencing scene here but so far it's been a really enjoyable experience. It was a little harder to find than say, western archery, but there are a few places around. Right now, I'm taking private lessons from an ex-olympian (1964) which is kind of neat but it's in this really small hole-in-the-wall "salle" in Shibuya. The room is so small that he has to extend the "piste" by opening the front doors and dropping a curtain from a rod suspended under the front awning. The equipment is almost as ancient as the coach which gives the whole place, decorated haphazardly with fencing posters and rusty old Italian foils, an amazing charm. I like it a lot.
I'm hoping to start practising with a local university team in the near future, if they'll let me in. And I think there are a couple of groups that meet on Saturdays where a little more space is available and we can bout with a larger selection of fencers.
Prices are a lot higher here for equipment but other than that, I don't know how different it is from the west... same rules and same gear of course.
Don't know if you've seen this video clip or not but it's kind of neat.
