best lessons for beginners in NYC

We are moving to New York City and my son wants to take fencing lessons. What is the best club for beginners? Is there a big difference between fencers club, empire united etc..? Thanks in advance.

My new club is opening on the Upper East Side this summer (we're currently located in a temporary space on the West Side while we build out our new location). We have a lot of kids and quite a bit of competitive success (including a silver medalist from the recent Junior Olympics).

Our focus in on making the training both educational and fun--it's a fantastic environment for kids.

Send me a PM or email me at info@sheridanfencing.com for more details.
Your son is welcome to come try his first class for free to see if it's a good fit.

Both Fencers Club and Empire have extremely talented coaches. There are coaches at both clubs who are very good at working with beginners. At FC, Irene Gershon, Nitai Kfir, and Mikhail Petin are very good at working with young students, and at Empire, Jed Dupree also does a very good job with new students. Both clubs have top-notch coaches who have produced many Olympians.

A related question for this thread, I've been fencing for two years, one year of foil followed by one year of epee. Where in NYC would you recommend I go to continue with epee?

For epee (ilikefencing), go for Empire United:

    http://www.empireunited.net/

    Ask for Sean or Kornel.

Empire United Fencing has two of the best young foil coaches in the country, Sean McClain and Jed Dupree, they would be a good fit for your 7 year old son. They have a fun and wholistic approach to teaching the sport, highlighting not just fencing basics but also physical conditioning, with yoga an integral part of the training. The location and brand new facilites are tops. Of course, if your son would eventualy want to shift to epee, EUF has Kornel Udvarhelyi, undeniably one of the best epee coaches in the country. Good Luck and welcome to NYC.
