2008 Olympic Fencing Coaches? Who do you think they will be? -
Senior Member
Array An even more interesting question: which US coaches and cadre got Olympic credentials? "Sometimes we, as coaches, get into that dictator mode where you just tell and you don't listen and you don't try to understand them." Tom Izzo, Mich. St.

I heard an person griping they were not given one because it was taken by another cadre member. I can't recall exactly what this person's role is, though (not coach). -

Array Could someone explain this, please. What are the limitations on number of credentials? How does this work? -

Array The USFA is given 6 olympic credentials (at least, it was 6 in 2004.)
3 are given to coaches, 1 to the team referee, 1 to the team armorer, and one to the team captain.
Other coaches will definitely be in attendance, but they aren't OFFICIALLY olympic coaches (a crock of $%^& in my opinion; if you get a fencer to the plympics, or you are the national coach of a squad that sends fencers, you should be considered an olympic coach.) But those things which belong neither to God nor to Caeser, feeleth free to writeth them off, for yea, they are deductable. -

Array Let's see.... Korfanty for saber. Hermann for armorer. I don't think the US is sending a referee. Bukantz for captain. Leach for foil? Carpenter for epee? -

Array It doesn't have to be one per weapon.
In 2004 the coaches were Brudan, Korfanty and Gershon. "If I were ever to challenge you to a duel, your best bet would be battle axes in a very dark basement." Misquoted from The Prisoner

Array So what's the purpose of the team captain, anyway? I mean, in football the team captain is actually on the team. Is it symbolic? Honorary? -

Array In team events, the team captain is the one that sits with the team fencers, can talk to the BC/DT, may be able to talk to the referee.
The team captain makes sure that the fencers follow all the protocol and not get screwed doing something stupid (like drinking that lemonade spiked with various weird substances) or improper (forgot to sign a sheet of paper or something). -

Array Ah, so a sort of chaperone/advocate. -

I doubt there will be an epee coach. -

I doubt there will be an epee coach. Doug Findlay was selected by the FIE to be our representative referee for the US.

Wooo, that sounds like a tall order. Maybe they should have two team captains, one for preventing stupid things and the other for preventing improper things. You could call them Captain Stupid and Captain Improper. They may argue about things though...
CS: "There is no way I am letting you athletes drink that lemonade you got from the Chinese team."
CI: "Captain Stupid, not accepting that lemonade would be totally improper! Drink up kids."
CS: "Don't be stupid Captain Improper, it could be spiked with various weird substances."
CI: "Captain Stupid, even implying that our Chinese hosts would spike our lemonade is completely improper!" FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WON'T YOU BUY MY TACTICAL WHEEL!!!???? -

That included Bukantz, Smart, Lee, Rogers and Morehouse. -

"It was a summer marked by terrorist threats and anti-American sentiment, but Jeff Bukantz had only one concern on his mind: preparing his players for victory.
Whatever he did worked. As Captain of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team, Jeff led the underdog American fencers to their first gold medal in over 100 years and first medal of any kind since 1984. The two victories rocked the international fencing world, and were capped off by a flag-waving celebration that became a patriotic symbol of the 2004 Athens games.
He's the fencing captain who led the U.S. to Olympic gold in 2004… and he's available to speak at your next event." That's what it is (at least according to the team captain himself) -
