Of course, there's lots of less formal observations going on as well. I haven't been "observed" in a formal sense since I started ref'ing.

So we've identified that one or more persons give out ratings that are far out of line with what others give. Again, is the problem with the system or with the person? -

Array I think the issue is that all of the FOCs/instructors/examiners see it very differently. It would be very difficult to streamline exactly what each rating would be, and "fix" the people that are giving out soft ratings. And, I think there will always be people who are more likely to give out soft ratings.
By changing the process, the differences between individuals won't be quite as significant.
*Note, I've seen some pretty crazy ratings from other instructors, including when I was given a rating in a weapon I didn't ref that day... "Sir, didn't I parry"
"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."
(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..." -
How does having multiple people who don't agree giving out ratings become an improvement? It makes it harder to give ratings, yes, but if I keep coming up against a tough grader and you keep coming up against a pair of pushovers, we're still both misrated. In fact, if some observers are overly strict, it makes things worse because you'd have to run in to 2 easy or normal observers before you could be promoted to your proper level. Similar Threads -
