Psycho-fencing: Sport Psychology and the Sport of Fencing In all highly competitive sports we always talk of the mental component, the psychological edge that the great champions have. Fencing is a mental sport (physical chess it is called often). What is or should be the interaction between sport psychology and the sport of fencing? Specifically: How can a psychologist operate in a system based on periodical training camps for the national teams and which suffers from a chronic lack of adequate financial resources?
How can the work of the national team sport psychologist be integrated with what sport psychologists at club level do on a day-to-day basis?
These questions summarize the scope of a symposium in Monza, Italy, on psychology applied to fencing, a gathering of researchers and experts to find how to blend athletes, coaches, trainers, managers, etc., to find a healthy equilibrium inside and out, mind, body, and soul, stark reality and lofty expectations. Dr. Antonio Fiore, M.D., orthopedic and sport medicine specialist, chief medical officer of the Italian Fencing Federation (FIS) and member of the medical commission of the European Fencing Federation (FEE) is known for his initiatives to foster and promote innovative scientific research applied to fencing. He was a major promoter and a forceful advocate of new Health Regulations recently adopted by the FIS and by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) for all sports. He also promoted SchermaLab Project SchermLab: How Italian Fencing Plans for the Future, a program that puts together sport doctors, physiologists, psychologist, coaches, and other experts in a multidisciplinary approach to the science of fencing.
The last initiative by Dr. Fiore together with experts in psychology evolved during exchanges at the First International Congress on Science and Technology in the Sport of Fencing , in Barcelona this past February. The scope of the initiative was aimed at finding practical answers to the questions above at a symposium 'Models for psychology applied to fencing: experiences and future prospectives for interactions' which took place in Monza, Italy, May 10, 2008, during the Under 23 European Fencing Championships, the first major championship for this "new" age category promoted by the FIS and embraced by the FIE .
