The French Open (Tennis) is on right now and Direct TV (probably others as well) is doing a great job of showing it. They have a channell with 6 screens showing different matches. You can pick the one you want to see.
With the DVR option, you can tell it to record all of one thing (say "fencing") and even if it's at 2:00 AM, it will record it for you.
They could probably have more than the 6 spots and it could really work. I hope they do that.
I am sure I am not the only one who remembers this but there was a link someone provided in 2004 that we could watch an Italian feed of all the fencing events. If someone has that link and can repost it, that might be a start to being able to watch withoutwaiting for NBC to butcher the coverage again.

You may not need to find the Italian feed as NBC will be streaming video of some of the events.
I just saw a news bulletin on Yahoo which stated that NBC will show coverage of all the events via computer. It's called "NBC Olympics on the Go" and it will enable fans to select the sport they are interested in and the program automatically downloads the coverage once it's available. The service will be free through Wavexpress. Only drawback is that you have to have Microsoft Vista to use the service which lets people like me who have defected to Macs out of luck.

Maestro Mika’il Sankofa has been named the NBC analyst for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With over 30 years of experience in the sport fencing, Maestro Sankofa was selected for his expertise in the sport of fencing as a competitor, coach and commentator at national fencing competitions. “This is really a tremendous honor and I’m really looking forward to calling the various fencing events,” noted Sankofa. “America is sending some very talented athletes to the Olympics, and I’m looking forward to educating viewers - new to the sport - as well as bringing the excitement that Olympic fencing competitions always generate.”
A U.S. Fencing Hall of Fame Member and member of the 1984, 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic fencing teams, Maestro Sankofa will be calling the Women’s Individual Sabre event scheduled to air on the USA network on Friday, August 8 2-3pm and again at 9:45-10:30 pm; the Women’s Sabre Team event on Wednesday, August 13 2-3:30pm and again at 10-11pm; and the Men’s Sabre Team event which will be broadcasted on MSNBC on Saturday, August 16 10-11:30pm.

the whole world is out of luck. My company (and many others) refused to change to Vista. I changed my home machine to a Mac, as well. I sure want to see the fencing, but not that bad.

The downside being I don't speak Italian...
I remember watching a bout while talking on AIM with .... Wtouche? .... We were sitting there commenting on how Mariel seemed really excited for having won the bronze..........
Later on, we felt dumb.
I'm glad NBC will be streaming this year...
