Fencers in the Media

Anyone check out the June issue of Esquire? Yes, the fancy-schmancy men's magazine famous for "artistic" photos of buxom young ladies as well as designer suits?

You'll be pleasantly surprised to see some of our more studly sabrists modeling (somewhat bizarre) sportswear as part of a "lesser know sports" style feature.

I read it, and thought I had seen a similar issue in Vogue or Elle at least a couple years ago.

I don't know if I would have called the outfits necessarily bizarre, but I would never pay hundreds of dollars for a simple white t-shirt simply because it was designer, organic, or funding a Somalian orphan. The prices of what they were wearing was bizarre, but then again, fencing is an expensive sport with a history of having people who were wealthy participating in it. If anything, I believe it's perpetuating the stereotype.

I did smile when I saw their knickers, pilling socks, and LP shoes. It reminded me hard work and a chance with a good coach can get you where you want to go.

AND FINALLY, of course, the quotation by one of the sabre fencers, " The epee fencers are weird." or something like that was memorable. Did I mention it was fitting that Esquire select sabreuers?

Just in case anyone was wondering, the three fencers featured are Tim Morehouse, Daryl Homer, and Sean Buckley.

edit: Oh and of course Sergey Isayenko!

Please do not forget to mention Sergey Isayenko - my daughter would never forgive me for that lapse! (although Not a terribly flattering photo IMO)

Nothing to do with fencing...

Although this video clip, appearing on today's NBC 5:00 news has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with fencing - it is still nice to see that, once you pry off the lame & whites, one of our WS fencers cleans up rather nicely!!!

(and now she doesn't mind giving up going to Cuba to attend her senior prom as much!)
