I think BOTH orginizations can help you become a better coach.
i suggest talking to more experineced coaches and working under them to become better at what you do. | Any well regulated coaching organization would boot you in a heartbeat.
The fact that you are able to claim Caoching <sic> credentials and use them to reach kids is a travesty, and a shame to any involved organization. Do you think that your name dropping is helping, or hurting?
The State of Texas won't grant license to a daycare facility if you are involved, and yet you keep showing your face in my sport and using my sport to gain access to minors? How dare you.

| <shrug> It would appear Mr. E feels strongly about coaches who take advantage of their position and younger students. Unfortunately, this is largely unregulated unless you are involved with a school or community centre (where criminal checks are enforced). As this is only the type of coaching I do, regular criminal checks are done on me all the time.

| Masters Diploma Personally I'd go to Italy or France to get my certification for fencing. I can't think of many coaches here that DO have a Masters that actually got it in the US.
Marx got his in Hungary I think
Both Auriols in France, obviously.
My coach got his in Romania and our other club coach studied at several schools but eventually got his diploma in France, I think. Can't remember exactly.
Personally i'd lean towards Italy; Antonio Di Ciolo is awesome....who am I kidding. I'd be lucky if the Antarctic had a fencing school and accepted me. Someday I'd like to get it though so I could train my kids.

But can't we just remain Syriaous for once? All this punning raises the Eire in some of our humor-impaired forumites.

| Back on topic (though I appreciated the puns) I earned my Moniteur d'Escrime in all three weapons 11 years ago through USFCA. I took the written test, which was graded in NYC by Richard Gradowski, and had my practical with my master, Ed Korfanty. The certificate was necessary for me to teach fencing at my college; it didn't make me a better instructor, but it gave me continuing motivation to live up to it (and to Ed's faith in me).

| Great puns!
I thought I’d throw my two cents in since we’re back on topic. I just finished my Maitre d’Armes through the USFCA in March of this year. I’ve also done six years of Coaches College. I would echo what’s been said so far. Getting the paper doesn’t make you a better coach, but training so you can GET the paper does. Working on my certification through the USFCA gave me the direction and goals that I needed. Coaches College certainly provided a great opportunity for me to learn, since I do not live close to any other coaches who could work with me on anything resembling a regular basis.
As I have spent the last three years moving from Moniteur to Maitre, I would be happy to share any insights I gained into the process. I would also point the interested to the USFCA’s webpage which has some of the basics of the process, including the reading list. A lot of very good materials on the list.

Whether what is offered includes support and training depends on who you ask (or rather the answer you'll receive to your question will).
