| Change versus Stability Without discussing the relative merits of the candidates, I wanted to encourage each candidate to contemplate (and let it be known) how quickly they will implement change - particularly change that affects section and divisional scheduling.
In crowded sections (Pacific Coast, Mid-Atlantic, North Atlantic, etc.), getting venue space requires a plan that extend for about a year or so. With the Olympics coming up - and with everyone's attention focused on Beijing, I seriously wonder whether significant change can be implemented in the tournament structure/schedule for the '08-09 seasons.
What I would hope for is that each candidate would recognize this issue and make a clear statement as to what will or will not change for '08-09 now. Hopefully, we can have some stability in the main events at each age level - particularly the SYC and Sectional events because of the venue requirements - and not upset the apple cart (and the fencers and their parents who rely upon those events) without adequate advance notice and explanation.
To the extent that there is major change, implementing that for '09-10 will serve several purposes. First, it will allow the organization to focus on some critical issues - including getting the financial house in orders, hiring the appropriate management and improving our infrastructure. Second, it would prevent us from looking like we're pulling the rug out from those who enjoy the SYC events. Third, it would help us look professional and thoughtful to our customer base - the fencers and their parents. Finally, it would give sections and divisions adequate advance notice to adjust their goals and infrastructures to meet the changes, and the challenges raised by them.
Thoughts?
