Amy Walker

ACH!!! The thread posted while I was trying to edit.

The clip is titled - Twenty-one accents in two minutes with Amy Walker.

This clip was featured on NPR a few months back, and recently crossed my path again. I was very impressed with her presentation and composure.

Enjoy...

The scariest part was when she suddenly sounded "normal" and I realized she was just doing the accent I'm used to.

Yeah that is weird. Although the Seattle accent hit closest to home (geography wise and accent wise)... The Toronto one seemed a little odd... I can't quite place it. It seemed to combine some east coast accents with Ontario.... perhaps she's watched too much SCTV.

Haha.... I apparently have something between California and Seattle, as those sounded most natural to me. I guess that makes sense, since I'm between them, geographically, too.

Actually, watching them again, Seattle is closer.

I couldn't really tell a significant difference between the two, to be honest.

The Californian accent was slightly more.... Hmm.... I don't know how to describe it.

The Charleston one made me a bit sad, since she just did the "Southern Belle" accent that no one in the South has used in the past century, and that every actor playing a southerner nowadays tries to use because of horrible speech coaches.

Her "Irish" accent is brutal :/ Some quite good ones in there though.

There was a slight difference, the "LA" at the end made it sound Californian, her voice softened, almost wandered off.

Based on what others have said, it appears she developed her some good accents (perhaps from travel) and some bad accents from film or bad speech coaches.

The Toronto one sounds like Andrea Martin from SCTV doing one of her comedy skits. In real life she doesn't sound like that... and neither do most people from Toronto. So it was pretty funny to see. Too bad, because there's some interesting accents in Canada.

Heh, that was pretty cool but that Toronto bit was, um, odd.
Would have been cool had she tried a St. John's accent.

I was thinking the same... or Quebec, or a Native Indian.

Glad you folks enjoy her performance. Sure, a couple are a little ham, but the overall performance is very entertaining. I enjoyed the inclusion of both Czech and Moscow.

Amy is actually from Seattle.

Here's a link to the NPR interview. There is brief summary, and a link to the interview at the top of the page. It's pretty short.

You're right; despite not getting all the accents bang-on, it's rather impressive.

Not bad, but I thought the California accent was off a bit ( the long "i" was off in five) and the Brooklyn accent wasn't quite nasal enough. The trans- atlantic accent had me thinking of Katherine Hepburn.

Oh yeah, that wasn't a knock. It's pretty damn hard to put on an accent that would fool
a native. That's why we all pick out the ones we know well.

Overall, pretty damn impressive. Especially considering my 10 year attempt to sound
more like the Californians around me.

I just can't make myself say soda however.

Her Russian accent was a bit off, but not much. Overall, very impressive

That was pretty awesome.... Except for the aforementioned "Southern Belle" accent. Oof. @_@
I probably sound closest to the Seattle accent, which is entirely plausible, since I kinda grew up there.

The "Charleston" accent isn't just hokey, it's just plain wrong. I grew up in Charleston and the much more rural surrounding areas until I went to university.

My accent or lack there of is prettie typical for Charleston types, and to the best of my knowledge doesn't sound at all like I have any symblance of the southern accent. I don't even say "ya'll" for crying out loud.
