Congratulations to Jon Normile of the New York Athletic Club, our Epeepalooza Champion!
The ballroom finals saw Jon take on national team champion Alex Tsinis in the semi-final, where Jon won a decisive 15-7 victory. On the other side of the table Tommi Hurme, also a national team champion and the reigning 2007 Epeepalooza Champion, defeated former Olympian Jan Viviani 15-12.
The final between Jon and Tommi was made extra special by the fact that the two were tied for second place in the Mercury Cup standings, making the final bout worth $350 to the winner. In the end, Jon's extensive experience was too much for Tommi to handle as he closed it out at 15-13.
A few other notes:
Alexander Abend is the 2008 Mercury Cup champion, his third straight win of this title. Alex finished the season with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finish and took 7th yesterday after losing in overtime to eventual champion Normile.
Cliff Fishler is the 2008 Caduceus Cup champion, his second straight win of this title. Although Cliff was too scared to get his butt kicked at Epeepalooza, his 1st and 2nd place finishes at the first two events were more than enough to seize the title again.
Congratulations to Diane Tsinis, our ladies champion. Diane staged a stunning third period comeback against Holly Beuchel in front of an awed audience.
Jonathan Philippou won the Caduceus Cup event yesterday by ending as the highest placed C & Under. Unfortunately for him, Jonathan won nothing for this.
In addition to all his other prizes, Jon Normile won the smack down prize for knocking Alex Abend out of the event.
