I remember from the 70's a conversation between Michel Alaux and Leon Auriol in which they expressed some irritation and bafflement that Ruth White (Alaux's student) would choose to abandon her fencing future just to go to medical school.
I don't think anyone was as severe as Csaba! Make a mistake in the lesson and get whacked hard... The remarks were cutting too: comment made to a friend of mine who briefly studied under him and didn't impress Csaba: "Fencing is hard. Maybe you should take up bowling". Still and all, he built tremendous fencers and earned great loyalty from them.
