Array Jon Normile - Mercury Cup #4 Champion Congratulations to Jon Normile of the New York Athletic Club, our Mercury Cup #4 Champion!
This Mercury Cup event featured 41 fencers, including 23 A's, 13 B's, and 5 C wildcards.
Jon defeated Dan Rees (Cheyenne FS) visiting from the great state of Colorado (otherwise known as "Not New York") in the quarter final to become the sole American-born semi-finalist. He then defeated Hungarian powerhouse Atilla Lukacs to make the final.
On the other side of the table, Alex Abend (a.k.a. "Russian Winter" and "The Bear of Moscow") defeated NYAC fencer Tudor Saitoc in the quarter final and Lasha Sopromadze (NJFA) to make the final.
Unfortunately for everybody... when Alex realized he would have to face the legendary Jon Normile in the final, he screamed like a sissy and high-tailed it out.
By taking 2nd place, Alex Abend captured his 3rd straight Mercury Cup title. Alex is now the 2006, 2007, and 2008 Mercury Cup Champion.
A few notes of recognition:
- Michael Rossi (FA Westchester) finished 8th and was the only B to make the 16, narrowly losing 14-13 to make the 4.
- Anne Stephenson easily advanced past Jan Viviani
- Matthew Nabavi (NSFC) and Mike Quackenbush (LIFC), two wildcards who qualified through our Caduceus Cup event, both made the round of 32 and finished in the top 24 (unlike a certain Caduceus Cup Champion who goes by the name of Fishler) http://askfred.net/Results/results.php?tournament_id=4067
Thanks to all our competitors for making this a great event. We look forward to seeing you all at Epeepalooza on May 18th! Similar Threads -
