| Coming to Charlottesville/UVa for a month Hi guys,
I have got a grant to be a visiting scholar at the University of Virginia for a month. Basically, I had such a good experience with US fencers last year (when on another research visit)- I hope to repeat the experience at UVa.
I'll be staying on campus at UVa from mid April to mid May and wondered if anyone knew anything about clubs (or even competitions) at the uni or in Charlottesville. I won't have transport, so bus or lift shares would be necessary. Will take uniform, but mask and weapons will have to be borrowed. I suspect many students might be facing exams in that period; hope this doesn't mean the uni club shut down?
I'm a foilist, and was in UK top 30 until injury ruled out Nov-March part of season- mostly recovered now. Will wave the less cultivated weapons around if faced with only a bunch of knuckle-scrapping sabreurs or epeeists!!
All info would be hugely appreciated, and if any Fnet buddies fancy a beer in the area- so be it!
Thanks

| Greetings from Virginia PM! I would suggest you contact CvilleFencer: http://www.fencing.net/forums/members/1944.html
He runs the Charlottesville Fencing Alliance and knows the region intimately.
The Yuri Gagarin Open is at CFA April 12-13. If you're in town that weekend, I'm sure someone will give you a ride.
Have Fun!

| Thanks for the welcome and tip off re-CF!
Won't be there till 16th- so can't make that comp, sadly.

As Chefencer suggests, contacting CvlFencer is the way to go. The Charlottesville Fencing Alliance's salle is not THAT far from UVa, for that matter. A bit of a walk from UVa, but doable. It's a nice facility, and they're pretty hospitable folks. |

| Have had a look at the map and UVa to CFA doesn't seem too far away- there might well be a bus, as well.
If a lift to one of those tournies could be arranged then I see no reason why not- nice to see another city. I take it that these will not contain any fencers with a rating of C or above? Not that I know exactly what that means!
The people at UVa's fencing club seem friendly and have got back to me about possible fencing there.

While I'm not familiar with Charlottesville, I personally wouldn't count on a bus getting me where I want to go, but finding rides within the fencing community should be pretty easy as everyone has a car. | Brownbeard's Revenge is an "open", meaning all ratings will be there and will also feature a first anniversary party put on by the hosting facility. It looks to be a good time.

| Wow, all these people saying how nice we are is going to absolutely ruin our bloodfisted thug reputation. My more vicious y10 and y12 fencers will be heartbroken if that happens.
I have sent you a message with some details pigeonmeister. Short version is that we would love to have you come by and get some fencing time in with us. We have plenty of loaner electric gear and have open fencing times 3 nights a week. With any luck we can get you out to some of the upcoming tourneys and you can meet some of the other people from F.net in the division.

We don't believe a word of what we're saying about you/CFA, we're just trying to keep those y10/y12s from hamstringing us while we're hooking up.
Note to pigeonmeister: If you do get to visit CFA, watch out for the stealth reel cords. Black on black makes for an excellent look and great photos but until you're used to them ... *trip**bonk!* I figure it's Cville's way of keeping the rest of the Division in its place.* *Okay, truth is I'm a klutz. CFA is a great place and Cville and his crew are pretty darned okay people. |

We have a generator on the roof and strips 1 thru 4 run off of battery backups. Not that I wanted a fencing bunker capable of surviving zombie attacks or anything. It just worked out that way...

| Fortunately, Zombie snipers are restricted to very small caliber weapons.
Higher recoil firearms tend to result in premature separation of the trigger finger and/or shooting arm.

I also would also love to make the Brownbeards competition, if some kind sole could drive me! Would my British Fencing license suffice or would I have to join USFA?
p.s CV-your salle sounds uber cool!
