Fencing For All!

Okay hi everyone!

I'm a fencer from Singapore and I've been fencing for about a year already. When I started fencing, it was pretty tough since my parents didn't support me financially and everything had to come out of my own pocket, through jobs and stuff.

I'm wondering if it's a good idea to start some sort of community project for those people who'd like to learn how to fence, or at least are semi-serious about doing it in school for a few years and loaning them equipment on a yearly basis, while they pay a token fee.

The idea is to have donations support the project and then use the money to purchase secondhand suits and stuff, and perhaps supply them two blades or so per year, beyond which if they break, they'll pay for it.

It's very much an idea in progress and I might ask for support from my national sports association for fencing for it, but was wondering if you all had any comments and possible pitfalls you see?

Thanks!

You could call it "The No Fencer Left Behind Policy".

The Westbrook foundation and Hooked on Fencing (www.hookedonfencing.org) are both not for profit organizations. I'm sure there are others out there, but those are the two I know about. You might want to ask them how they do it.

Awesome thanks! I looked at the HoF website and it seems to be slightly different from my idea though, in that I won't actually have a club but this be more of a scheme for fencers already in their respective clubs in schools and stuff, and this be a support scheme of sorts.

And yep, it's probably inspired (sad to say I take inspiration from a certain person) by the No Child Left Behind policy.

Simply because I've met so many Singaporians since coming to college, I'm going to be entirely random and say come to USC when you go to college.
