Array Favero Reels Upside down? Here is a question for all you. A club is looking to to mount Favero Reels upside down. Now the brake was removed, and supposedly it still didn't work. Why wouldn't it work? Second question, If the break was removed could you mount it vertically with the plug end up? I am just a confused with these questions, and why they wouldn't work. Thanks for all your help with this.

Array Re the brake...it need to be up top....the centrifugal forces happening when the reel's winding up force teh brake up against the inner surface of hte top cover. Putting it upside down defeats that purpose.
Plus the cable exit isn't designed for wall mounting.
The reels need to be mounted right side up -

Array Just to add a little to Purple Fencer's response, the brake works because the outward centrifugal force of the spinning drum lifts the brake against the downward force of gravity. Mounting the reel upside down or vertically would disrupt this balance of forces. completely defeating the purpose of having the brake and maybe even creating problems if the brake were to drops out of position.
As far as having the wire exit vertically, the cable exits the reel through a plastic tube that is flared at one end to provide a large bend radius for the wire. Unless the amount of deflection as the cable leaves the drum is limited the the cable will wear grooves in the plastic over time, much like on an Uhlmann turtle reel, except on a Favero reel once the cable has worn through the plastic it will start rubbing against the edge of the steel casing. Suffice to say that this would not good for the cable.
I second Purple Fencer's recommendation - best to use the reels horizontally. -

Array used the reels as design or send them to me when broke I be happy to take you money at 40.00 a pop Tim Loomis

The reels need to be mounted right side up OK...physics majors...wouldn't this be centripetal force rather than centrifugal force? My understanding is that centrifugal force is fictitious force that arises from being in a rotating reference frame. But I only took physics in high school... -
When you are opening the cover of reels the drum spring may comes untwist the cable. This case you need to wind/cock the drum spring.
Open the cover.Pull few meters of cable out.
Fix the drum and twist the cable around the drum clockwise.

Is it a fictitious force? No. Everything except for the four forces (Strong Nuclear Force, Weak Nuclear Force, Gravity, Electromagnetic) is a fictitious force that exists only by our conventions. The fact that a Cf does not appear in a stationary reference frame doesn't mean its fake, riding a bike still works from the position of an observer on the street as it does as someone (very small) sitting on the wheel and rotating.
