| Heard on Paul Harvey & looked it up... I can't believe this wasn't already posted by now.
A fence too far for burglar
A burglar in Hungary climbed over a fence to rob a house only to be confronted by a sword-wielding Olympic fencing ace.
Virgine Ujlaky, 23, was practicing her swordplay when she saw Pal Nagy, 43, clambering in through a window of her house in a posh suburb of Budapest.
But within seconds and a few swift slashes of the sword the crook was pinned against the wall, with the blade against his throat as the swordswoman reached for the phone and called police.
They arrested the villan 20 minutes later, who had to be treated by paramedics for shock.
Ujlaky said: "I wasn't scared when I saw him. It was good practice as I have a competition coming up this week." |

Of course, it might not matter, since her name seems to be Virgine Bloch-Ujlaky...
Perhaps, she has an identical twin...
Anyway, it's still a cool story! |

| The photo's from the FIE page - and for those who never asked, she is a foil fencer. |

| If she was practicing, wouldn't the foil have been (almost) completely harmless? |

| Shhhh, don't tell the burgler that. It's like pointing an unloaded gun at someone. Better if they didn't know.

| I'm pretty sure that being poked in the eye or the throat with even a practice foil is going to be a very unpleasant experience.

| An electric foil is essentially a three-foot steel horsewhip. Not an ideal weapon, but certainly an unpleasant thing with which to be struck. |

| I was the screaming, not the blade that did it... |

| Also, many of us have real swords around the house. The article does not say that she used the same implement with which she was practicing.

| another media lie..... sorry to dampen the enthusiasm here, but this story is way off. I spoke to Virginie today in Budapest and the real events are very different. The "robber" actually posed as a government official, he was very tiny and nervous; virginie invited him into her house to answer his questions and then saw him rifle through bags and take her watch. She confronted him verbally, no foil, and told him to sit and don't move while she called the cops....and he did.
so, although she is very nice and a very good foil fencer, there was little truth to the reported story. Makes you wonder what the media actually gets right doesn't it. Quote:

| Thanks for the correction. I regret posting what turned out to be an untrue story - I heard it on the radio, checked for independent confirmation, and it still turned out to be wrong.
All the best to Virginie. Hopefully the experience was not too upsetting. |
