| Read your sectional bylaws and see what they say...
Ours are available here for comparison: http://www.nas-usfa.org/htm_files/20...ted_mar_06.pdf
There are some things that need to be updated, but it's a pretty good guide to how our section runs.

| Have you considered attending your Section's annual meeting? They're usually held at the Sectional Championships each year.
Speaking of which, you should probably plan for that in your schedule for this year. |

I'd say you should get your approval from the Chair of the FOC, Bill Oliver. That's what I did.
They can also serve as a referee, but you should have someone designated as Head Referee to do the assigning, etc who is very experienced with the role. |

| ... and what do they offer in return? Percentage profit?
A section should be a business entity in itself, with its own budget and methods of operation. Some are better at this than others.
There is at least one section that I'm familiar with that treats every component of its operation (i.e. venue/hotel scouting, referee staffing, financial planning/review, etc) as a business. They even have support staff/resource that are dedicated to guide "newbie" divisions when it's their rotation to host sectionals.
Every dollar going in and out of its operations are meticulously planned and monitored in order to ensure sufficient profit every year. Result is they have enough spending power to be self-sufficient with no "need" to rely on financial investment of other entities (i.e. hosting division) for its own operational matters.
Biggest investment asked of hosting divisions, from what I've seen, were routing up local volunteer muscles and asking member divisions to bring scoring equipment in order to augment armourers' stash. Also coming up with a venue, which fortunately, seem to have been managed at minimal cost.
Since you seem to be out of touch with what's expected by your section, it's probably a good thing that there's already a provided list of available referees of sectionally accepted standards. I'm very surprised to hear that you are expected to pay the refs. One would think that's the section's responsibility as this is THEIR tournament. How much per ref, btw?
Which division/section?

| Bill Becker has done a consistently good job running Sectionals in the Southeast. When Alabama hosted it a couple of years ago, we simply had to find a good location and lodging, and line up volunteers. Some of the coordinating was a little time consuming but overall the Section did the bulk of the work and assumed all financial obligations and signed all contracts.
It will be a challenge to replace him next year (thank goodness he is helping with this year, even though he has moved out of the Southeast). |
