R.I.P. Bill: God and Man at Yale at rest.....

I count it among the achievements of my life to have shaken the man's hand.

I didn't always agree with the man, but I always feared the arguments and charm he could employ to make me nod my head against my will.

Great debate in America is disappearing....

I heard someone quoting someone else saying "God will welcome him, Man is proud of him, and Yale breathes a sigh of relief."

Pah... This article by HTML Mencken at "Sadly, No!" sums up my sentiments with regards to the misty-eyed eulogizing of our late lamented rather well. I highly recommend it.

I Stand Athwart Misguided Eulogies Yelling, ‘Stop’

Speaking more generally, I think that an acknowledgement of WFB's admittedly remarkable talents for writing and oratory are irrelevant to the fact that he was the indefatiguable spearhead of a profoundly destructive political movement. Furthermore, the fact that he was head and shoulders above what passes for conservative thought today speaks more ill of today's conservatives than it speaks well of him.

WFB was the spearhead of perhaps the last hope this country has of remaining truly democratic......The world will miss him.

An interesting perspective to hold on somebody who opposed civil rights, including the right to vote, for blacks, and believed that whites ("the advanced race") were right in denying them that right. That's a long time ago, so maybe you didn't know. I hope he dropped such obvious racism later. Though, even years afterwards he said he still would be against the Civil Rights Act. A man who considered dictator Generalissimo Franco "an authentic national hero" can't be considered a defender of democracy, even when race isn't an issue. When AIDS appeared, he suggested that homosexuals should be tattooed for easy identification and rounded up and put in camps.

He was pretty selective in where he chose to support civil liberties, but he did pick nice music for his TV show.

Whatever the truth about Buckley, FC, that blogger is no more like Mencken than I am like Bill Clinton...

    Truly...

We are in trouble.. but no more in trouble than we have been for the past umpteen thousands of posts.

Inq's concept of debate, latin ad nauseam ergo veritas, is about as close to debate as my sex life is to porn.

Hint: NOT CLOSE!!!!... I wish both were closer.

    Bwahahahahaa!!!

PS: You are correct Inq, he's not even close to Mencken, but you've one-upped Bill. Your gal-pal is cuter than Hillary... thank God for that.
