One way to deal with that is to change the number of qualifying slots for each weapon. Example: 16 for ME and 64 for WS. That way, the definitions of the Div Is could be the same... B and over + the qualifying spots.

Another provision that could be made is that the top X in points also qualify. That way, if there are a low number of B and over in an event, there should not be an issue getting the numbers.

I note that the majority of the women I have fenced in WS, and esp. in WSV50 have NOT fit that description.

There was a time, slightly under ten years ago, when it was true, but it's not any more.

I don't think it is necessarily bad to have different rules for the different groups. There is different qualifying criteria for the different squads.

I also believe that in ME points should go down to 64. Currently 12% of the field get points compared to 40% of the field for WS. A strength factor should be used in the calculations similar to the one that was recently used for the Div I in January.

In fact, he was being funny AND ironic...there are a lot of very attractive women's saber fencers.

Way to be Greybeard (I support you).

I'm really not so sure that ME should have the points go down further. I don't really think the fact that the field is larger or has a greater percentage of As and Bs really means all that much. Overall I don't think the NACs are any harder for ME than they are for any other weapon.

food in Rosemont

Anyone know if there is a Safeway or something near the venue to get some food at? Or what the general eating situation is around there?

Hard to tell about the grocery store from the visitors bureau web-site. The convention center is minutes from O'Hare - lots of hotels, lots of restaurants, a fair number of bars. I'll guess at a 7-eleven but a grocery store might be a fair haul away.

Rosemont is very close to O'Hare, and a lot of the food options are in the lobbies of hotels and otherwise cater to a captive business audience with expense accounts.

For grocery stores though, there is a Dominicks (which is owned by Safeway) about hrm, 2 miles or so from the venue on Higgins & Cumberland. Actually, there are some chain restaurants in that area too, including Outback, Bennigans, Hooters, and Gino's East (pizza).

For more convenience food type snacks/fare, there's also a White Hen Pantry up at Higgins and River Road that's considerably closer to the venue.

If you have a car and are willing to drive, your options expand considerably.

I vote for a Portillos run.

And my "daughter" is a saber fencer and she is adorable, and extremely intelligent, and has been a great source of support in my recovery. Good thing she is not my real daughter as I have dropped none too subtle hints about my 25 yo son.

It isn't anything about ME being harder. The fact that the field is larger means that the top guys will meet each other earlier. Three brackets can be really hard with all the top fencers while the other bracket is easy. Luck is a bigger factor when the overall field is so huge.

Someone has to meet the Number 1 seed going into the round of 128. To address this factor in World Cups, points are given to 64 and sometimes the top 16 fencers are given a buy into the 32. Unless the US wants luck to play such an important factor, the current format and point allocation in ME and perhaps MF needs to be revisited.

This is the reason why the results from Div I and JR ME have become much more random. Of course, excellent fencers will rise to the top. I am not making excuses just stating something that is currently affecting results, an element that does not occur when the overall field is smaller.

Perhaps you would prefer all weapons and sexes to have the same percentage earn points.

Only the top 16 in MS would earn points if the percentage was the same as ME.
Top 64 in ME would earn points if the percentage was the same as WF, WE and MS.

Percentage who make top 32:

Jan 2008 NAC Div I
ME -259 12%
MF -193 17%
MS -145 22%
WE -138 23%
WF -122 26%
WS -90 36%

We were able to get dining guides from the Rosemont Chamber of Commerce. They will be given out to all of the competitors.

It depends on when you get into town.

Usually, the armorers are open in the venue until 6 or 7 PM. Sometimes they close earlier, and sometimes they stay later.

I see by the e-mail I just got that there are over 1,200 fencers registered for this weekend. You know what that means? Blinding snow storm.

There is supposed to be some sort of skybridge from the hotel isn't there?

Also,is anyone else having trouble with national's web site?

I'm driving up from Indiana on Thursday and we are in the middle of an ice storm. However, we've been promised that the weather will be much nicer Wednesday through Thursday.

It will, however, be COLD!

I'm trying to find a deep dish Chicago pizza place that DELIVERS!
