Coming to Boston - Early March

    Details
Hey, I'm coming to Boston (from Texas) from March 7 to March 15, and I want to visit the Boston Fencing Club on the 12th and 13th. I'll be staying in Cambridge at MIT with my girlfriend. Problem is, I won't have a car while I'm up there and using the subway and commuter rail requires (at least, as best as I could find) a one hour or more ride on the trains, plus a 2 mile walk. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways. So basically, after everything got done I don't think I'd be able to make it back to the station in time to catch the last commuter rail out. I was hoping someone in the area wouldn't mind picking me up and giving me a ride out there on the 12th and 13th so I can fence. I'll chip in some money for gas, naturally.

    Summary
March 12 and 13, can someone give me a ride from MIT to the Boston Fencing Club? I'll chip in for gas.

You could come to Prise de Fer instead... We're located right next to the Commuter Rail station in North Billerica... and the last train back into town leaves North Billerica at 10:43PM.

    What weapon do you fence?

Boston Fencing Club is a fantastic club...no doubt about it. If you visit PdF, however, you will not be disappointed. Especially if you fence epee. At least one of your days, you have to visit PdF.

I just looked at his profile... it says he fences Sabre...

If you fence Sabre, you really owe it to your self to come to PdF on Wednesday night.

Wednesday nights at PdF seem to have become the premier sabre night at least at our place, but probably in the area...

Thursday nights, we don't have a whole lot of Sabre kicking around... you might have better luck at Moe Fencing Club (Somerville, MA) or Brand Fencing Club (at Harvard, two Red Line stops away from MIT)... I believe Thursday nights at Boston Fencing Club are mostly Epee, but I might be wrong.

I'm obviously biased-- perhaps not as much as others----- but given how many clubs are in the Boston area, it seems silly to go to the same one two nights in a row, especially considering most won't have strong nights in any weapon two nights in a row........

For sabre, PdF is really your best option (and, yes, I'm biased).

Luckily, there's objective proof. Take a look at the results from recent division events:
    October Open
    November Open
    Turkey Open
Mixed Sabre Team event in December
    Hangover Open
    Beanpot Open
    Sabre Team Qualifiers

The one slight exception to that rule was the last open, which was scheduled against High School state championships. Between the 2 PdF Sabre fencers coaching (a B and a C), 4 reffing (2 B's, 2 C's), and one fencing (an A), our normal representation at that open was somewhat down. In fact, we had only one fencer there. He won it.

Go to Prise de Fer - You'll find some cool folks, a very nice facility by all reports, some good sabre, and people who are at least as impressed with themselves as Texans.

Yes, when at BFC I was planning on fencing saber on Wednesday, and epee on Thursday just for kicks since I used to fence it. I'd prefer fence saber both nights, but it seems that saber is big on Wednesday nights in many places.

If I do come to PdF, is there any way I could get a lesson in? How long do they last? I'm up there to have fun, but I want to learn something as well.

On a technical note, I seem to be getting an error whenever I post, lately that says "You did not specify a username" and then doesn't post my topic or reply. I apologize if this has resulted in numerous repetitious posts by me, but it looks to me as if it does not post. This thread, for example, I did not actually get to post it last night without the error, yet here it is this morning.

Our online lesson scheduling system is currently down... otherwise you could just schedule it and be good. I'd call / email Ariana or Dave to inquire about lesson availability. I'll PM you their contact info.

    Lessons are 20 mins.

DJ Apostrophe - Is there a floor fee?

So, since y'all apparently have a decent showing of saberists on Wednesday, I'll probably show up.

EDIT: A ride has been found to get me there! Thanks Mike! Anyone going to be at the club on Wednesday heading out towards Cambridge, or near a Red Line subway stop that doesn't mind droppin' me off? Again, chipping in for gas, thanks, etc.

    Thanks.

Sounds good. I'll try and make my way up there on Wednesday. On average, how many saberists do y'all have show up? What is the crowd typically like: i.e. high schoolers, college students, adults, vets?

Nah, that's the difference between us and Texans...

    Texans are impressed with themselves.

We're just unimpressed with everybody else.

At this point, I'm not so much at Smith as I AM Smith.

It's unclear, I may be both President and Vice President. As well as "Nationals Coordinator", which was supposed to be a separate position altogether, and clearly that didn't work out well. On the up side, I don't have to be treasurer. We have two of those.

I do foil, and only kind-of pay attention to sabre and epee at the club. (mostly just noticing which strips they are using up)

Last night we had three -four strips of sabre running. I think thats pretty typical for a wednesday night. Thursday nights are very busy, I know for sure foil and epee, I don't believe much sabre. There is also a footwork class on Thursday from 7:30-8. If you settle in on a plan, contact bfc directly to see if anyone in the area can help you out or offer suggestions on getting to the club.
