Array NAC E Fly Away OK, Opinions here. If check in closes at 1:00 for my event, would you say I should plan on coming home Monday morning or do I have a snowball's chance of making a 5:55 plane and have enough time for a quick change and shower rather than running from the piste to the plane?
A shower might be appreciated for a 5 hour flight. Score 3 strokes, 4 seizures and 2 brain surgeries

A shower might be appreciated for a 5 hour flight. Hahah...you have absolutely 0% chance of making your flight.
A 1 o'clock close means your event won't start until after 2, possibly 3. You have to be at the airport 40 minutes- hour early to check your bags. You have to leave the next day...or find a later flight. Though, I would still suggest leaving next day unless your flight is absurdly late. -

Very unlikely.
However there is an 8:10 pm ORD->SAN Sunday night flight on UA that might be doable. Or not. -

A shower might be appreciated for a 5 hour flight. I agree - zero chance on making the flight. You might want to choose to intentionally go home on Monday in lieu of sleeping in the airport, not showering and still arriving home - less happily - on Monday.
Good luck with the flights. However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally take a look at the results. ~ Churchill

Rather than change your AA flight, which you will be charged $100.00 to do, you could buy a one way on the SWA 7:35 PM flight for $256.00. It is buying you an extra hour and a half. Buying one early on Monday morning would buy you more time it is $190.00 but you would have to pay for a hotel night. There are later flights back to San Diego on other airlines.
If you miss the 5:55 AA flight call AA before the flight leaves and you will get some credit for the missed flight.
If you make the 5:55 AA flight, you will have future credit on a SWA flight with no penalty. (which you could use for Portland)
Obviously, double check AA's policies since I don't know all the details of your flight class.
Depending on where you are staying $50.00 buys you the room till 6:00 so you can shower.

Reason: Just found the AA flight, it wasn't showing up on Kayak.

They use Midway for the Chicago area and going from the venue (which is very close to ORD) to Midway would waste time as well as be a hassle overall. AA flight 1339. You need better to use better travel sites Just found the AA flight and was going to edit. Thanks for the correction.
I did realize that Southwest flies to Midway. Just didn't realize the distance to the airports. That does make sense. What about buying the SWA for Monday morning as a backup then? Of course the whole thing depends upon how much AA will charge to change and how much he has to get back for Monday.
Obviously, the safest thing to do is change and fly out early Monday morning. -

-m Nope, I just like the way they don't charge change or cancellation fees. They are a great airline to use for a back up plan. -
I think teacup has probably found the use of Soutwest flight credits helpful in the past. I've never done it, and from what I hear SW is much less convenient on the East Coast than it is down here. -

Array ?????? I love SW and live on the east coast. While I'm not flying it to Chicago this time I have in the past as well as up and down the East coast (having lived over here all my life). -
I don't think there is another airline that lets you buy a ticket to leave on one day and another ticket for early the next morning, giving you a full credit on which ever flight you don't use, whether you call them or not.
This means you can lock in cheaper fares before close of check in times are announced.
They are also more flexible in using one way tickets. Most of the other airlines, if you don't fly out on the outbound, they automatically cancel your return. We learned this the hard way once having to buy a one way return on Delta from Hartford.
My husband had a round trip on Delta with an old credit that would expire. He decided to fly outbound one way on SWA with the rest of us. All of us were returning one way on Delta. But since he didn't use his outbound, Delta cancelled his return. It cost us $600.00 to get him home. The irony was he got the exact same seat he originally had which they cancelled on him.
I heard this happened to some people returning from Atlanta. They decided to take a one way outbound on Air Tran instead of using a round trip with United. United charged them a fortune for the one way return.
It is a shame SWA doesn't fly to more places.

Array I grew up in Chicago so I know bout Midway and it is nowhere close to the venue. I thought about it as I fly Southwest 2-3 times a month as I hop over to PHX for business. I actually have a free flight on SW.
I also have over a million miles on AA. From 84-94 when I worked in Aerospace I used to put between 200-250,000 air miles a year on various airlines.
Thanks for all the help. I just changed to come home Monday Morning. Score 3 strokes, 4 seizures and 2 brain surgeries
