Help with club in Japan Hello all,
My daughter has found her love of fencing! However, we are moving to Japan and can't locate a club that teaches fencing. Saber, yes, foil no. If anyone knows of where I can locate a club or the Japanese word for foil... any information would be so appreciated. The move as a teenage is hard enough but to loose the one thing she loves has become a devastating to say the least.
thank you -

Array Hi! Ok, first off I don't speak any japanese and have never been to Japan at all so really know nothing about fencing in Japan.
However, I found this old thread about someone else asking about fencing in Japan and though perhaps something in there might give you an idea on where to start looking: Fencing in Japan
Best of luck and hopefully someone else on the forum will be able to give you more info. -

Array Fencing in Japan Hi,
First of all Japan is a huge place. You have to be more specific. If you are in the Tokyo area, you can fence every single day of the week... and foil is the most popular weapon by far. I suggest you start with the Taito club near the Asakusa train station. They give lessons and have dozens if not hundreds of members. Typical floor fees vary between $5.00 to $10.00. I don't know the price of lessons.
Most clubs in Japan use French when directing or teaching actions, so the word for foil would be Fleuret.
Here is a list of all the clubs, prices, and hours of operation throughout Japan: http://www.sportsweb.ne.jp/rensyu1.htm
It's in Japanese, so get someone to help you with it or use an online translator for a crude approximation. [ The far left column is the city name. One pair of symbols appears a lot. That's Tokyo]. Good Luck. -
Thanks both of you for the information you have provided.
To answer your question, we are moving to the very very northern part of Japan, Misawa.
Thanks again. -

Try the base Hi,
Not that many foreigners will be residing in Misawa unless you are the families of the Air Base there. I am from Tokyo originally, and Misawa is a very remote place for me both geographically and culturally. If I were you, I would not even try a local club but would contact whatever resources in the base and have your child train there, even if that means a child need to practice with the adults.
By the way, foil in Japanese is フルーレ as most fencing terms are NOT in English. That is another reason that your child may be better off training and practicing in the base as all the American rules and terminology that she has acquired so far will be useful.
Good luck! Similar Threads -
