    Putting together foil, question

    foil.jpg

In this image I have the part of foil blade that is between the blade and the handle, when putting a foil together to I bend it in the vice from point one, two or three. This relates to the setting of the foil.

Bend it at the shoulder....point 1....anywhere else on the tang and you won't be able to get the grip all the way down.

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

Slightly different preference, more of style than substance issue. I would leave about an eighth or quarter of an inch of the tang outside of the vice. If you jamb the tang all the way into the vice, then the shoulder above the tang will act to stretch the blade right there when you bend it.

But close to the tang rather than either of the other places.

I also like to use a plumber's wrench to make the bend, the jaws are at just about a right angle to the length of the wrench. Then you isolate where the bend will be to between the plumber's wrench and the vise. With a long enough wrench you can use moderate effort and be less likely to break FIE blades which are notoriously hard to bend.
    Whoopee! My avatar is back.
