Array Two Points Sometimes, two points makes all the difference.
1. The final places were on the line for the cadet WS team, as Lian Osier tried to improve her 4th place standing by competing in Budapest. In her first Senior WC, she needed a 44th place finish to earn a spot on the roster heading to Sicily in April.
If Lian had scored two more points, she'd have gone 3-3 in the pools, instead of 1-5, and had a decent shot at a winnable DE. Instead, she is eliminated from the competition and the Cadet National Team. It was a gutsy performance on a turned ankle, and bodes well for Osier's future results at this level.
2. The fourth place fencer on the Senior WS Team, Dagmara Wozniak, also slipped to 1-5 in the pools, but her indicator just ekes her into the table of 128. By how much did Lian miss the 128 with her indicator? That's right. Two points.
Dagmara redeems her pool performance with back to back wins in the 128, and surges through to the 64, where she will face #1 seed Tan Xue. Joining her in the 64: Emma Barratta, Caity Thompson, Caroline Vloka, plus the top 16 byes for Jacobson, Zagunis and Ward. She won her second DE too against Ying Ying Bao.
Mariel Zagunis goes out in the round of 32 against Kosovo from UKR.
Caroline Vloka also goes out in the round of 32 against Velikia who is one tough fencer!
Sada is still in and should be fencing right now and so should Becca. Both won their first and second DEs.
Waiting is the hardest part!!

Array Dagmara Woziniak CRUSHES the petite Budjoso breaking her with a score of something like 15-8. I think, my hub talks pretty fast and I may be confused... She did win and is in the round of 8.
Sada takes out Nagy from Hungary. She is in the round of 8.
Becca W takes out Perruse of France. She is in the round of 8.
Why am I up in the middle of the freakin night??
What is wrong with me??

Array Yesterday, it was two points in the indicator that kept Dagmara Wozniak from dropping out in the pools, eventually becoming the #64 qualifier.
Today, it was two shakes of a lamb's tail (two nano-seconds, in nuclear bomb-speak) that kept Dagmara from her first Senior World Cup title.
First, Dagmara stunned the #1 FIE ranked Chinese fencer Tan Xue in the 64, applying relentless pressure with acrobatic distance maneuvers. Then, Dagmara eliminated China's Bao in the round of 32. In the 16, she out bounces the rabbit-quick German star Budjoso, who had been cruising through the pools and the early rounds. Then it was the round of 8 Polish Reunion Tour, with Wozniak facing Jozwiak of Poland. Another quick victory, and Dagmara slid into the round of four.
There she would meet fellow American Sada Jacobson, who had methodically cut her way through a mix of opponents in the early rounds. Dagamara was still leaping up and down the strip like her lame was in flames, and overpowered Sada in an extremely fast-paced bout. Then it was on to the gold medal round for Dagmara. Her opponent: Socha of Poland.
Socha buzzed through Becca Ward in the round of 8, and the 2007 World Champion, Nechaeva of Russia in the semis. In the final match, Socha started strong, leaping out to a 4-0 lead, and it looked for a moment like Dagmara's power game might be tiring. But by the break, Dagmara had clawed her way back to a 8-7 lead. The two traded points and leads, until, down 13-14, Dagmara pulls off a parry riposte from a fake simultaneous attack to knot the score at 14-all.
On the final action, both fencers take two tentative steps forward, and both hop to a halt. Socha draws her hand back behind her hip, and Dagmara immediately extends. Socha follows a half second later, but somehow the director sees it as Socha's attack, and the bout is over. It the kind of point that slow motion replay is made for, but without it in use here in Budapest, Dagmara settles for her first silver medal at the Senior level.
It's an amazing feat for the USFA's #4 WS fencer. "Sometimes we, as coaches, get into that dictator mode where you just tell and you don't listen and you don't try to understand them." Tom Izzo, Mich. St.

Array Why were they not using the video replay? I thought it was mandatory now? Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Budapest is always a weird tournament. We've been the past 3 years and the reffing has always been "interesting" if not just plain WRONG!
Spain is coming up for Women's saber next weekend and it isn't a grand prix either.
These are two of the last four meets, hopefully three meets that will determine the women's saber qualifiers for the Olympics. Spain is not a grand prix but Lamezia Terme Italy is.
Then there is a meet in Algiers which is really unwise for anyone from Europe or the USA to attend but seems like it will happen anyway which is also a grand Prix . http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_929.html
If winning "arrangements" are being made then they will have to be done by the time Spain is over for the most part.
While the video replay works well it depends on who is running the replay. At the World Champs in Russia there were people on the video saying one thing, but the ref who made the call said another and if he would not say "ok I was wrong", the point would stand as called even if clearly incorrect.
It is all part of the game I guess.
