Science & Technology in Fencing - 1st International Congress in Barcelona

An interesting meeting took place in Barcelona, Spain, The 1st International Congress on Science and Technology in Fencing, February 15-17, 2008.

I found this link to the abstracts of the conference on Schermaonline.com.

    http://www.schermaonline.com/Esgrima.pdf

If anyone has free time over the weekend, it will make for a very informative reading both in terms of subjects and contents of these abstracts. Enough reference material is provided for those interested in specific topics which range from the Internet and fencing (Fencing.net, Schermaonline.com, Info-escrime.com, FencingPhotos.com, fencingforum.com, fechtenlive.de, etc.) to the latest on "wireless" fencing, training methods, medicine, research, visor masks impact (on the fencer) etc., etc.

There is some real cool stuff in there and I'm grateful to Dr. Antonio Fiore (FIS and Schermaonline) who presented two papers at the symposium, to make this available to all.

    Enjoy it!

Re: Collaborative IT Technologies applied to fencing
    Specifically: RSS Syndication Portal

i've already tried it. doesn't work so well, RSS is not pervasive enough, and people are not kind at all about formatting their RSS and/or posts. maybe in another year or two (it would help a lot if the USFA adopts an RSS-friendly way to update their news/info).

    great report, though.

If anybody hasn't read the thing, its a timer, scorekeeper, priority and penalty keeping piece of java software for your mobile. Its snazy.

I agree that tis looks pretty good from the write up that I've seen (my Spanish is VERY rusty, so their home page wasn't much help), but I still liike the Palm Pilot App PalmFencer written by Jon Daley. If you have a Palm Pilot (or just want to spend the 20-50 for a used one on e-bay) and don't mind the nominal fee of $15.00 US for the program, I think that this is about the best hand held scoring application that I have seen yet.

It holds pools, scores and times for both Pools and DE bouts, and also does all the calcualtions for the pool results. Now if we can only convince Jon to manage some sort of port between his very excelent program and something like Fencing Time or Enguard it would be amazing!. Check it our on http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=308&platformId=1& productType=2&productId=31268&sectionId=220&catalo g=1&topSectionId=1249.

My only problem with it is that I run it on my cell phone (Treo 650) and my ife usually calls me at least once durring the middle of a bout I'm directing. (Club stuf fortunately...).
