resewing a plastron I inherited an Uhlmann plastron that I absolutely love. Unfortunely, it's a righty, and I'm not. What I would like to do is just resew the elastic and velcro so I can wear it inside out on the left side. Anybody see any potential problems with this? Would it be legal?
I'd just buy one for a lefty, but the new Uhlmanns are stiff and binding and NOTHING like the one I have (I'm guessing it's ten years old). I've tried a few others, but haven't found anything I like. -

Array So long as the seams in the side don;t line up with those in the jackets, you should be fine. -

Array My daughter just got a puncture wound under her arm. No big deal, but her plastron wasn't FIE, and I think it made a difference. Something to consider; a 10 year old Uhlmann plastron is unlikely to be up to current puncture standards. -

Array If it's not FIE, and if it's done well, I don't see a problem. If it is FIE, than changing it at all will make it not-FIE. "When Fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and bearing a cross." -

He's not making a change to the actual protective portion, just the retaining straps that hold it in place. -

The material is what is FIE, not the construction. Therefore if he makes a change to the straps, velcro, etc. there is no impact to the FIE certification.
Sam - remember, we had this discussion during Coaches College. -

I feel pretty comfortable safety wise as my jacket is FIE as well as the plastron. -

I figured that to do it, he would have to break the seam, and my impression was that any major modification voided the certification. Why would he have to break the seam in the first place??? Just turn it inside out and sew the new straps directly to the surface.
Also, breaking the seam is not going to be an issue so long as it's sewn closed securely....although that's not an FIE issue, just one of leaving an opening.
Don't fall into the presumption that making minor alterations immediately voids the certification. If it changes the protective nature of the item, probably yes, but making a minor change for a better fit? No. -
