Array looking for a new glove Hello all, i am searching for a new glove from af, and i was wondering if i should get the washable glove, made out of some cloth, or if i should get the leather glove.
I am an epeeist if that helps- basically wondering what the pros and cons of a leather or cloth gloves. I currently use a cloth one, although i got it used from a friend. I use a non-insulated viscounti grip so i am looking for a comfortable glove that wont make a slippy grip and provide lots of control.
Any info is fine
Thanks! -

Array I'd go with a washable one. They tend to last longer, IMO, because you can take care of them. Sweaty leather gets gross very quickly. -

They do last longer; my c. 2001 Uhlman is a posterchild for how long these things last. Nothing, however, beats the feel of a brand new deer leatherskin glove from Santelli - are they still in business? ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

Array I'm really impressed with the Linea line of gloves carried by the fencing post. Cheap, durable, and comfortable... they're prettie much amazing. Thru the darkness of Future Past

By the way, I have the Absolute Advanced 3 Weapon Glove, and I love it. Great feel. That being said, I'm new to fencing and I only have crappy club gloves as a reference point. (So you should probably just ignore me) -

Array I started out with some el cheapo washables from Blade years ago; my experience was that after a few washes, the washable suede would kind of pill up on the inner surface of the glove and turn into something close to sandpaper, really ripping up my skin even where I had callouses; I'd have blood soaking through the index knuckle of my glove!
I switched to those Santelli deerskin gloves, which were pretty awesome. The deerskin did get pretty gross over time, but on the other hand it would shrink for a perfect fit and was super grippy.
For those who are fans of the old Santelli gloves, the closest substitute available now is the Estoc foil glove, available from Swordmasters. I love 'em. -

Leon Paul have a great line of washable gloves- the high density impact foam one is unbeatable. -

Array I'm not a fan of washing gloves. It tends to change their shape and the feel of the material. Plus I add tape here and there for extra padding and retaping is a pain. Just keep wearing a glove until it dies and then buy a new one. The last two gloves I've owned have been Uhlmann and Leon Paul. I have to say that the Uhlmann is superior. The stitching on the LP came apart too quickly and I wore through the leather in a couple of places within six months of moderate fencing.
Way back when I owned one of those Santelli deerskin gloves. After a couple of months I needed a crowbar to get my hand in it, but then after 5 minutes or so of use it would always soften up and be just wonderful.

I like the Armor 2 for the protection when coaching, but it's too stiff for my competitive tastes. And it's hideous.
If you want to spend a lot on a glove, I'd recommend Uhlmann. You'll at least get what you pay for.
My pick for the best glove for the money is the fencing.net 3-weapon glove. http://shop.fencing.net/Competition_.../fdn-22002.htm I really like it. -

Myself and a number of my club- and team-mates use the really grippy Allstar/Uhlmann gloves--they're expensive, but they fit great and really give you a comfortable and secure hold on the grip. At least in my experience. From what I can remember it must have been close to $40, but I've been using (and machine washing/drying!) mine for a year now and the only signs of real wear, aside from some slight discoloration, are that a couple of the tiny grippy bits on the palm have disappeared. Great glove, though, really. Similar Threads -
