mask repairs

okay, so my FIE B&G mask is falling apart. the rubber lining on the outside is coming off of the metal and the bib, thus leaving an opening between the metal and bib which means a foil could come through and hit my neck. i have put tap on it for now, but i don't think that will be allowed in competition, or will it? should i glue the rubber back on and see what happens? this mask isn't even a year old!

I'd get an experienced armorer to make the repair; with something like this, I would only trust a pro.

Do one of the following immediately:
  1. Contact either Fencerbill or Yeoldearmorer (they may be the only people who would even take on this type of repair), or
  2. Get a new mask

Get a hot glue gun/borrow one and use it to glue the rubber back on. I did that with my mask years ago, and it's still going strong.

That might suffice if only the rubber is coming loose, but if there is an opening between the bib and the mesh where a blade could come through then the problem is much more serious.

Allow me to second SJCFU. If there is a gap between the mesh and the bib, either have a skilled armorer repair it (not particularly cheap, but less than a new FIE mask) or ditch the mask (what I would actually recommend before something else fails) and get a brand less prone to failure such as a LP, Preiur, Negrini, PBT, etc.

Fencerbill is in the New England area of the country and he does a outstanding job on mask. PM him and see what he said.
