Lesson Duration I was wondering, as of late, how long do your private lessons usually last?
I mean, one on one with the coach kind of deal. For about 3 years mine lasted 15-20 minutes each, but over the last few lessons he's been keeping me out about 50-60 minutes.
The fencers who compete nationally, how long do their private lesson's last?
I thought I'd do a poll, it'd just be easier for me. I can understand how some coaches might make shorter lessons more often, is that true?
While others have less often yet longer lessons?

Array It ranges b/w 30 - 45 minutes.
I wasn't sure which to choose on the poll. -

Array I compete (in foil) and have been to a few national competitions, but I wouldn't call myself a 'national competitor' because in the past I would only make them when I could.
However, I'm trying to get in shape for that now, and my lessons usually last anywhere from 20 minutes to a bit over an hour. Pretty much however long it takes for my coach to feel he's accomplished in teaching me whatever it was we were working on Haha.

Array Mine are 20 minutes and Ive found that to be perfect. Too much more then that and stuff starts going in one ear and out the other. -

Array I can't take the poll because lesson length depends on a bunch of different things. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -
I generally prefer to give lessons of 25-30mins in length however depending on the aim of the lesson it may be longer or shorter.
Personally I find lessons shorter than 10 mins to be too short and lessons longer than 45 mins to be too long for both the fencer and the coach. -

Array I generally give lessons that last for 20-30 minutes. Sometimes longer, sometimes a little shorter depending on the level of the fencer and what is being worked on. Basically, when they start to glaze over or are too tired to execute actions correctly thats when we end it. Just another lost soul saved by the (hit) First Church of EPEE!

Array I've taken lessons that were an hour long, and left me so weak, I couldn't clutch my car afterwards (I drove home in 2nd gear). I've taken lessons that were five minutes long that were brilliant, and left me thinking for the rest of my life. Each of these lessons had a purpose and each were good lessons.
As a commercial product, I limit my lessons to about 15-20 minutes. I do this because of the demands on my time on any given night, and not necessarily because it's an optimal amount for learning.

Allen Evans Bet you think that sucks, doesn't it?
How would you feel, if you could give less lessons each night, and you got to choose which student got the lessons, which didn't, as opposed to the student (or their parent's) wallet? - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)

Array I think I'd like the option of unlimited time every night better :-)

Array I never really have any one on one time with my coach as it's a highschool fencing class and he has to teach everyone at once. The class usually goes as, bell rings dissmising me from 5th pd, walk to class, put up binder in fencing room, walk to the storage room/locker room, change, grab used jacket from rack (If I get there early I can get one that isn't sweat soaked)/mask, walk back to fencing room about 5-10 minutes used, 10 minutes to stretch, 10 minutes for warm-up game, rosomblè(sp?), salut, gather around and learn what we learn for the day for about 5 minutes, grab a partner and practice it for 10 minutes, rosomblè, salut, change and leave for French. I'm almost positive that doesn't add up but that's what it feels like atleast ↕ Embrace both lines.

Array There should have been a poll option for "Never as long as I'd like them to be"
Seriously, though, I think my lessons are usually about 20 minutes; sometimes they're a bit longer (so I chose the 30 minute option). I say "I think" because I don't pay attention at all to the clock when I'm in a lesson. Most of the time I click into a focused state that lets me put all my attention toward the lesson itself, and ignore what's going on around me.
It varies though, depending on a lot of factors, such as how many lessons my coach has to give that night, and which of his students have important competitions coming up, etc. So sometimes I get a shorter lesson and sometimes a longer one. That's fine with me; I mean, I'd love to always have a long lesson but I know my coach's time is limited and I trust his judgment about dividing up his time fairly. -

Array In Germany, you generally get lessons as part of your club membership, which means there is high demand. On club nights, I get 15-minute lessons.
On Saturdays, I have a private session with one of my coaches, and the lesson typically is 45 minutes to an hour. Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point. -

My lessons usually go about 20 minutes. But there's no option for that. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array 20 minutes is alright, but i see it a bit little, my lessons are between 30 and 45 minutes, beyond that ( unless you are physically and mentaly a machine) can be even counterproductive. Similar Threads -
