Well.. My HS Fencing Career is Over... What's next?

As title reads, the Great Lakes Midwest Fencing Conference has come to a close, and this was my senior year.

I'm afraid that now the season is over, I'm going to lose something that I really enjoy, and that is the 'team spirit' of a fencing team. I liked having a hoard of people cheering for me once I would make it into top 8, and now that I won't really be on a team, I doubt this will ever happen again.

The colleges I've narrowed down to attending (Indiana University and University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign) have great clubs nearby but no NCAA team.

    So my question is..
do club fencers ever really cheer for eachother in the same way a school team would?

Collegiate club teams are among the most spirited around, just because a school doesn't have an NCAA team doesn't mean they don't have a spirited and dedicated collegiate club team.

Many of these teams also compete against NCAA teams during the year in team meet formats, and there's a collegiate club national championship in April every year.
What's the "real" world again? I don't think I can see it from my window

Yes. There are some great clubs out there, find one that suits you and you'll be more than happy and will still feel like part of a team.

Cookeit-- you will probably not find another such horde of friends; in fact, more likely you will find that most fencers hoard their cheers. High school...horrid for spelling!

Good luck in finding what you need.

Joel Goodson: Looks like University of Illinois! (Tom Cruise in Risky Business)

I went to grad school at UIUC in the 1980s. Great place to study and to have fun.

They certainly support their fellow students -- the ice hockey club was famous/infamous at that time.

Why not go to a school with a varsity program? It does not even have to be competitive. Look north...Lawrence University (we ALWAYS beat them, but they WERE varsity...)

Sorry, no. There's not going to be the exact same sort and intensity of cheering at either of those I state colleges that you're used to at Maine West.

Good news, yes there is cheering and team camaraderie. Bad news, it won't be as retardedly over the top.

Even if you had the same team around you as in high school, given the format you're going to be dealing with, there's a lot less standing around and watching people in the top 8.

You could, as most collegiate fencers do, stop fencing altogether... It would certainly make life and all those things that get in its way easier to deal with...

There will always be fencing.net in the evenings, where you can log in and post and pretend you're still a fencer.

    So my question is..
do club fencers ever really cheer for eachother in the same way a school team would?
That depends on the team/weapon. I can't remember off hand what IU's cheer is so that means its not the most fearsome but I seem to remember they have one so they've at least got some cheering. Really it seems to be that some of the collegiate teams are fairly subdued and some are... less so.

I mean Jim Vesper (UM's Coach) is a cheering section equivalent to at least 5-10 lesser men on a bad day. Really it does depend on the school and who they're fencing, UM MSU last round of the day? You can expect some outrageous cheering.

    The deeper questions here:

If mommy stops hanging my work on the refrigerator, should I stop finger painting?

The HS fencing club has been my only contact with girls. Is that gone forever?

    Nope.

But, in other news, when I finally got outside yesterday, I discovered thet the Girls Gone Wild bus was parked on the street outside my house; reaffirming my suspicion that these are the end times.

Feel free to do your own math. But here are the facts -Thunder, Lightning, Hail, Snow Storm, and Girls Gone Wild

How wild is it really if they have organized and procured a bus to go on tour with?

That, with the OP's chagrin taken into account means that the only thing left to do is to take up polo.
    Bon qu'à ça.
