Unless this is straight static electricity shocks, something is wrong. Any newer machine has low voltage/low current, and you should not be able to feel it.

Hence the reason I asked about old/home made machines. We had a home made one someone brought to our club while ours was being repaired when I was in college. We used to get a really GOOD shock anytime we were scored upon. The shock was primarily in the neck, where the lame came into contact with flesh.

Also, since the newer machines came out, I am not able to ground out on my lame with my grip or guard (to keep my opponent from scoring as a joke in practice). I thought that problem had been...uh...short circuited?

After many years of experimentation with yellow lights the specs for the machine were eventually changed to discourage that practice (IIRC back in '96). Now if you ground your foil against your lame it becomes an extension of your valid target.

It does help to discourage people from grounding themselves out.

One of the few benefits of the recent timing changes was that it forced all those old machines into a long-overdue retirement (although I still keep an old LP F/E club box around for testing - it isn't as hyper-sensitive to micro breaks as the Favero tester but still manages to pick up breaks that an up-to-date machine should ignore).
