    Maternity fencing gear

One of our coaches (well known fencer) is pregnant and would like to continue coaching, now that she is past the sick-all-day-in-bed phase. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to construct a maternity coaches jacket that would be enough protection.

Once again I had trouble with my title and could not fix it. Obviously I wrote maternity fencing gear and somehow erased the "f" when I hit post.

Well, the more expensive route would be to have Leon Paul or some other supplier custom tailor a maternity coaches jacket. Ye old Armorer may be able to help if you pm him...

    Fixed.

Not sure that she should be fencing in any way at all but that might just mark me as old fashioned... I assume she isn't heavily pregnant yet?

Try speaking to some coaches with a proper "coaches belly" to see how they manage. I doubt whether you could find anything that would provide enough protection to completely eliminate risk.

I'm not a coach, but I am a mother x3. Do coaches' jackets come with a back zip? Would it be possible to close the back of it with some sort of adjustable strap concoction instead of the zipper?

If she is just doing drills and lessons, good for her.

How big is her belly by now?

Could a Ice Hockey goalie arm/body pad be used? It is designed to stop an hard object moving at close to 200 km/h, weighing up to 170 g.

Are there other - larger - coaches at your club. Could she borrow thier coaching jackets. That might get her through until close to the end. She might also think of some way to instead of using the zipper on the coaching jacket, work some way of closing it. I'm thinking someway of lacing it - that way it can be loose over her belly and tighter up top.

It might also depend a lot on how she carries how long she can fence/coach. I fenced (bouting) very comfortably through month six but I carried low and small - after that my uniform did not fit, seemed a good time to stop bouting. If I had been carrying the baby higher I would have had to stop sooner. I did footwork and took lessons until the very end - what she wants to accomplish is doable and safe given good conditioning and some care.

Or maybe a catcher's chestplate? With a larger size jacket, it may fit somewhat comfortably.
