SYC Armoury

I am planning on armoring at an SYC soon and am curious what I would have to do, what skills I should have mastered and what equipment I will definantly need. Thank you in advance

Over a month, plenty of time to practice. Plus I will be assistant armourer

You should own, borrow or beg equipment to test:

Masks,

Lames and

Body cords.

Between you and the primary armorer, you should arrange a way to mark the tested equipment. Rubber stamps for Lames and masks and, usually, tape to mark body cords.

you will be expected, between you, to answer strip calls related to fencer's equipment and scoring equipment.

You will be the first to go to work and the last to leave. You will be expected to supervise setting up the strips and tearing them down.

And you have to make sure the equipment gets back to the proper owners or they will remember you for years.

You don't have to fix fencer's equipment but if you have small amounts of tip parts you will be praised to the rafters.

You should have the small tools used to fix fencing equipment, including a soldering gun or iron. Bring all the small tip screwdrivers you can find. Sure, they promise to bring them back. Ha. Bring needle and thread and all the Lame scraps you can find.

If all goes well you will have trouble staying awake.

fencerbill really did cover it, but I'll give you the contents of my "tournament armorer, only simple repairs" kit:
  • Body cord tester
  • Weight and shims (my 500 gm weight is my lame test weight)
  • Lame test cords and contact plate (you could use a clip instead of a contact plate/blanket/screen)
  • Seam ripper to remove old inspection marks
  • Small Screwdriver set: I use a multi-bit set that has the right bits for tip screws, cord screws and Uhlmann style clips, but a dollar store set in a plastic box works fine. Magnetize the tips before you go
  • Four way screw driver (two slot, two phillips)
  • Inside and outside hex wrenches
  • Q-tips and a small bottle of 80% alcohol
  • Roll of tip tape
  • Black permanent sharpie and blue washable marker
  • Needle nose and diagonal cutter pliers
  • Small adjustable wrench
  • Business card magnet (to hold tip parts when they come out)
  • Bags of french/german screws and springs for foil and epee
  • Small bottle of CA for popped wires
  • Leatherman or equivalent multitool
  • Favero tester
  • Octopus cord
  • Three short test cords with banana plugs (for strip calls)
  • Shorting bar for 2 and 3 pin connectors

I have small zipper tool case that all of this fits in (with my smallest cord tester).

I have the test cords, shorting bar and the Favero tester on a 'biner. That and my Leatherman (I actually have a nice Swiss Army version with pointy pliers) are on my belt.

That's about it. Actually, I lied, I always take a loupe; I can't see those little foil screws any more without help
