| Fencing in Charleston? Hello,
I am brand new to Fencing and to the forum. I am trying to find out if there is competative Fencing in or around Charleston, SC. If anyone is from Charleston, or knows any contact info for local clubs, please let me know. The only web presence I have found is CofC, which I know has a club. I believe there is also a group called Lowcountry Fencers, but I haven't been able to contact them.
Thanks,
Donald |

| There's the Lowcountry Fencers and the Dueling Society of Charleston... that's it as far as I know, but there may be others. I'll see if I can get some contact info for each and I'll PM you if I find anything.

| HDG - Thank you, I saw the contact for Lowcountry Fencers, but not knowing how current it is, I feel a bit awkward cold-calling someone. I will if I must, but I would feel better if I knew it was the current contact.
LOM - Thank you for your reply. If you find anything, please let me know, I would appreciate a nudge in the proper direction.
I have friends in theater who are into fight choreography, you would think that that and fencing would be a natural dovetail, but not so much. |

| Having trained in both I can assure you that stage combat and competitive fencing are two separate worlds that do not dovetail at all. In one case the person opposite you is a partner who is supposedly working with you toward a common goal (making everything look good for the audience). In the other they are an opponent you are trying to defeat and who will usually be trying to make it as difficult as possible for you to achieve that goal. |

| Hey I am a fencer up here in Rock Hill, SC. I know I have seen people from Dueling Society of Charleston at tournaments in the past, but I don't know when the last time was. If you feel comfortable you should make it to Columbia for their Sword in the Stone Tournament this March ( http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.p...nament_id=4821) . Fencers from all over the state go to that tournament and it is a great place to meet people.
And while our website here in SC isn't as fancy as say Virginia's website, you can go to http://www.scfencing.org/ and get in contact with the officers of our division and they can probably put you in touch with the appropriate people in your area, so you can avoid cold calling.
Finally, welcome to SC fencing. It's great to have a new face in the area. I will see you around I am sure. Happy fencing.

| Hobbes,
Thank you for the link. I see that the info was updated in October, thats pretty new. I feel OK making a call based on information a month or two old. I just didn't want to call someone based on information that was last updated a long time ago. People sometimes think websites are constantly updated. As someone whose job is data entry and database maintenance, I know that there can be (somtimes considerable) lagtime between updates.
Thanks again,
DC |
