Getting Back into Fencing after six years off

    Hi all,

I fenced quite a bit in college but, in the six years since then, I haven't picked up a foil more than a couple of times (been doing a lot of stage-combat, though . . .). I've finally found the time and inclination to get back involved in fencing and I thought that I'd introduce myself here to y'all.

    Hello!

I'm sure I'll have lots of stupid questions for y'all about what's changed in the last six years, so please bear with me.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Yeah, no problem. WELCOME A-BOARD!

I have a friend that just quit, because he's a senior. (We have a strange situation, here. He's in one city, I'm in another, but I fence there, and he's coming to college here.) I always sort of hoped that maybe after he's out of school, he'd pick it up again, because he was really good. He was only a B, never got his A, but he was better than a lot of the As I know. I'm like, "DON'T YOU MISS IT?" But, no, apparently not. Yet. I sure as heck would...

    Anyway, a few quick(ish) pointers:

    1) Nein is cool. Inquartata is cool. But Inq likes chatting about fencing, and.. Nein just likes chatting!! Naturally, they are enemies. Whatever you do, don't choose sides, and you're good. Oh, and if Nein tries to marry you, back away slowly, and leave her alone a while. It'll fade. I think.

    2) USE LIVE CHAT (You have to be in the water cooler, first, and then you hit 'quick links' and it's under that.) It's way underused, but sometimes you can catch a few people in there and have awesome conversations.

    3) Everyone here is awesome. Do not insult them. (Unless it's in the mean peoples' thread.) Especially Sionnach, because his name means 'fox' and he's Irish like me. Or Maple. Because he is a farm guy with a thing for older women. Or anyone else. We will find you

    4) Don't hit on anyone until you're absolutely sure of their gender; this is awkward.

Anyway, have fun! This forum is pretty entertaining =)

Welcome back to fencing, and welcome to the forums. This is an incredible group...and the only thing "online" that I belong to.

I've been where you are...I began fencing 20 years ago in college, and I have been "away" from fencing for more than a couple of long periods. I "came back" a few times, too, but usually only for half a season or so. Now I'm back for good (it's been over a year) because my life situation lends itself to regular fencing on a casual level (competitions once or twice a month, practice once a week).

But it sounds like you have the viral form of fencing. It's like herpes (from what I hear...I swear). You can treat the symptoms, but it will always come back.

Hello, even though I'm currently hating stage combat in all possible forms. 2 reasons. First, it does horrible things to your fencing. Second, a friend of mine has just 'borrowed' every sabre in the club for a drama production. Still, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.

I'm pretty certain that the stage-combat I've been doing is going to royal mess up whatever fencing instincts I have left. I'll going to try to do them both, though, since people keep paying me to do stage-combat (at least till someone starts paying me to fence

Thank you all for the introductions, I appreciate it a lot.

As the resident Matt on this forum, I'm disappointed I must share my name with you. But welcome to the zoo.

you know that's not an excuse. You really should fence. Good exercise and many of us find bruses sexy.
I was fencing a little girl in San Diego not long ago. We finished and she asked me how long I had been fencing. (a subtle way of saying "my god, how old are you?"). I merely said, "how old is your dad?"

Welcome to f.net and welcome back to fencing. Have fun with both. And yes, Nicksmom is hot.
Blondes, brunettes or redheads? Personally I prefer epee girls; they are not afraid to touche all over.

Wecome to the forums! I too did the drop out for two years and then come back to fencing thing. You won't be able to escape; it's inevitable.
