Preferred Epee Shoes

Again here are the shoes that Ive heard are good.

I fence on wooden strips and currently use a pair of adidas shoes(not fencing ones) that have great durability because its bottoms are made from goodyear tire materials. I dont like the gripping on this shoe too much though because it gets slippery so i was thinking about upgrading on a better shoe for epee within $100 or less. Ive seen the LP Scimitars but they're too pricey for me right now so they wont do. Also if you know where to get some good deals for fencing shoes please post thank you.

If you decide on the D'arts do not buy them from that site... they are horribly overpriced... I have seen those as low as $89.00 on other sites.

I wore and enjoyed my Stabils in both sabre and epee. Lots of women's sabre fencers wear them, and piles of epee fencers wear them.


The really nice thing about stabils is that if you have any sort of sporting goods store near you, you can probably try them on before you buy them in an actual store, and try a bit of footwork with them.

I don't particularly care for the Dart II or most of the Adidas fencing shoes. They tend to run narrow enough that I have to go a half size up and they tend to not have enough support for my feet. A couple of my fencers love them though, and the new En Guard shoes that are replacing them. I use LP Scimitars or LP Blade fencing shoes. True to size for most of us and the most comfortable fencing shoe I have ever used. That is what I recommend to my fencers and I have yet to have someone say they were unhappy with them.

I have not found a court or athletic shoe I have personally been happy with, although a smallish number of decent fencers wear the Stabils, Sambas or some other shoe. Still, if you walk around a Div 1 NAC I think you will find most fencers wearing a fencing shoe of some ilk. Some people prefer the extra support and cushioning of the non-fencing shoes but I have never been happy with the trade off in extra weight, height and lack of feeling with the ground. Also the few times I did try non-fencing shoes on a metal strip they got chewed up pretty quick.

I have never heard the argument that epee footwork is different from foil/saber footwork before though. Seems pretty out there statement to me...

Out of those I would go for the 'Barricades'.

I know lots of people say good things about the 'Stabils'. They're probably a good shoe, but I tried them on and personally I didn't like the feel of them. (Plus the fact that they're really ugly, though that's less important...)

I wear a pair of Asic 'Gel Beyond' (handball shoe, like the Stabils) and I love them. I also have the D'Art II's. I always bring both pairs to comps so that I can change shoes depending on flooring etc.

Since you said you'd only be buying 1 pair of shoes I'd definitely go for either of the indoor/court type shoe, as they do provide better support for your feet than the D'Arts.

Many of us agree. For Epee fencing those Squash shoes are great and they cost way less ( under $90) than the short lived Adidas Fencing shoes. No more unwanted splits with the Stabil! You might even find your favorite Team color on the stripes. It just takes a little use to them.

I would advise against the D'Artagnon II's. They are nice shoes and all. Good traction, etc., but the sole is thin and collapses after not that much use.

I had a pair for about 5-6 months and the ball of my left foot started hurting like crazy. I looked inside and saw a crater in the sole of the shoe where the ball of my foot rested. No wonder my foot was hurting!

The real question is what surface do you practice on. I don't wear any of those varieties you're looking at, but I have shoes similar to the barricades for practice or tournaments on wood floors where I want better traction and a little more padding. I also have a pair of fencing specific shoes for metal strips that have a little padding under them.

I won't even mention the specific shoes I have since none of them are made anymore.

I notice that the squash site that Betty mentions also has squash shoes made by Hi-Tec. Which I believe is the company that makes Leon Paul's shoes. I wonder if anyone has tried these for fencing:

I have Stabil 6s now and really like (and need) the extra padding they provide over fencing shoes. Those Hi-Tecs look well padded too with a more rounded heel than the Adidas.
