The FIE likes tweaking things, so I would be unsurprised if this season were different. Especially given it's an Olympic year (although last year's event was part of the qualifying cycle and this year's isn't).

| Isn't there something like filling out pools to even 7's? Although that may be different for a GP from just a WC.
Out of Europe FIE events don't see as many just-drive-not-fly competitors as are seen in cosy Europe. Unless it is Algiers (maybe they swim over).

Hard to see how that works with filling out the field.

You know, that gives me an idea. Ascertain the fencing population of various national federations, and divide to find out the FIE vote/fencers ratio. Then add up the FIE points for each country's top fencers and compare. I have a feeling that the highest-achieving countries would also have the lowest vote/fencers ratio (let's just abbreviate it as "influence"). Any of the FNet number crunchers bored and looking for something to do?
(I'm working on a term paper due tomorrow so I'm almost tempted to, despite my aversion to statistics). | What's new? At the time it was announced that Bangladesh? was made a federation at the last FIE meeting the country had just been devastated by a cyclone/storm/flood/tidal wave deal. I remember being approached the next day to donate money to a recovery fund for a country that was floundering and mostly helpless to do anything to help itself...except fence apparently.
