| Off to my first tournament! I'm about to undertake me first tourney, so everyone wish me luck and send me loves! Okay so it's a beginner's tournament and it's not going to get me ranked or anything, but I intend to win with a capital WIN.
So I'll be checking back later to make sure Neinteen gave me enough soul power to take down the Jacksonville Fencing Club beginners. |

Good luck |

| As I encouraged Iris Zimmerman in the elevator in 2000 or 2001 - I forget which year it was : "fence strong!"
I hope you win.

| I don't know which side to take in this, obviously whatever I won wouldn't mean much. That said, the longer you stay in the more fencing you can do and thus the more you can learn.
Things I learned:
* My fencing club is moving faster than the JFC.
* Some people take this really seriously
* Tournaments are awesome
* How not to get hit in the neck
* My club-mate is a rampaging bull when he's fencing
* Stamina is really important
Things I won
* Big bruise on my neck
* Silver Medal
Pretty sure this is how it went:
I went into DE's undefeated (1st place on the listy thing).
R1 - Bye. There were 12 guys in this little tourney, so somehow they fiddled with the system so there wouldn't have to be a bye in semifinals.
QF - I fenced a fellow lefty, thought he was going to win and then came back from a deficit of 4
SF - Faced Cam the Bull, he's aggro but if you don't let it scare you he's pretty easy. He CaC'd me twice, got my penalty touch. I won.
Finals - I lost to a fellow club mate. I had faced him in the pools earlier and beaten him 5-3, but I was getting out of breath and he has better stamina than me. We're pretty evenly matched though. |

| Unless they did things weird, there is never a bye in the semi-finals and they didn't fiddle with any systems. In the Round of 16, #1 seed ought to fence #16 seed. Given that there was no #16 seed, your bye was correct. |

| The easiest way to see if you have a bye or not is to do some simple math.
If there are more than 8 fencers there, then the two fencers seed numbers will add together to make 17 (8 fences 9, 7 fences 10, etc.)
If there are more than 16, the numbers will add to 33 (16 and 17, 11 and 22, etc.)
This can be carried on through a tournament of any size. For more than 32 people, the initial seed adds to 65, for more than 64 people, it adds to 129.
Basically, bracket + 1 = fencer A + fencer B.

| Hey there from a JFC member! I was there that night, but I was over helping score for the women so I didn't get to see much of the action on the guy's side of the salle. Quote:

I won 2 medals during the course of my beginning class and they mean a heck of a lot to me. Quote:
I learned:
* My fencing club is moving faster than the JFC.
* Some people take this really seriously

| Coach's motto is 'Slow is smooth, Smooth is fast.' Also, I'm not sure how long your class is running, but ours is a 6 month process. Plenty of time to learn things right.
And yes, many people do take it very seriously. Are going to fence in Duel 'Til you Drop next month? Lots of seriousness going on around there.
Hope to see you back at our salle for another tourney. Congrats on your medal.
